A PROPER 357 MAG CYLINDER FOR SURE. FOR REASONS UNKNOWN TO ME, BUT LIKELY RELATED TO TOLERANCES AND PERHAPS METALLURGY, I AM TOLD THAT YOU CAN ALMOST LOAD THE 357 REDHAWK TO FREEDOM ARMS MODEL 353 LEVELS BUT NOT TO THE 353 LEVEL. ***** Rey.... if I had a Redhawk .357, it would be the original 6-shot like James's. Beautiful revolver. One would have to design a very good, or very stupid, experiment to blow a Redhawk .357 cylinder. I haven’t published some loads we fired in SRM .357 Maximums, with didn’t do diddly to the gun. The brass was shot. The Redhawk has a thicker cylinder than the Blackhawk/Super Blackhawk. A pressure test between the Redhawk 6-shot .357 cylinder and the Freedom Arms Model 353 5-shot .357 has no relevance, as either cylinder will support pressure beyond the worth of the brass case. As for using a completely inappropriate propellant, reckon I could wreck either cylinder. I you want to send me one of each, I’ll do my best to oblige. During our testing of the .357 Maximum, and ever since, not once did I charge a case with medium or fast powder. Folks who look for trouble usually find it. You may continue to increase .357 Mag velocity----and pressure----by increasing charges of Winchester 296 or its Hodgdon label H110. It give the experiment relevance it should be done with simultaneous targeting @ 100 yards, or 200 yards or meters. David Bradshaw

My BFR reamed to 360DW will easily match the velocity of the 357max. However it doesn't like bullets over 190gr.
Twist rate must be the problem. I can back it off to 210's at below 1350 with several powders and it tightened up. The 359-640 gets loose above 1450. I don't know the actual twist, never checked.

I HAVE A 5.5" SS 357 REDHAWK, WHICH WILL REMAIN STRICTLY A 357, AND THE NEWLY ACQUIRED 5.5" SS REDHAWK 357, WHICH CAME ALREADY REAMED TO 360 DW, WHICH I CAN USE TO DEVELOP POWERHOUSE DW 360 LOADS OR AS A DONOR GUN.

That 6 shot cylinder is a huge Chunk of steel.... Anybody checked the cylinder weight of the 6 shot versus the 8 shot?

NOT DISCUSSED YET, BUT IMPORTANT TO NOTE: THE REDHAWK AND THE FA 353 357 CYLINDERS ARE PLENTY LONG, LONGER THAN BLACKHAWK CYLINDERS, WHICH ARE LONGER THAN N FRAME CYLINDERS, WHICH IMHO HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TOO SHORT.

That cylinder is quite the build. My newer Ruger Redhawk in 357 doesn’t look anything like that of course it’s an eight shot… I only own one 357 but I think if I found something like you show in your picture I’d be all over that just because of the cylinder. ONE .357? Please never let my Missus know it's humanly possible to only own one!

At one time I thought of the mod. 28/27 N frames as over built for 357. It appears I was wrong. They are but 357 toys.

I have two k frame Smith's. They're my favorite 38's.

Then there are those among us who like K frame 22s...

My favorite J&K frame load is 12.8grains of 2400 over a standard primer and under a 358156 slug. Yeah it's high end 38/44 stuff but very accurate, powerful and easy on small 357s. That Redhawk cylinder is something to play with. I understand the versatility of one chambered for a 360DW. Wow, Downtown Brown!

Once you start playing with the DW it will not become a donor unless it's for a customized DW! I'm wanting to get a Redhawk and a newer 6-shot BFR to rechamber. The first run 5-shot bfr had a 1 in 20 barrel that doesn't stabilize heavy bullets efficiently, but a hot DW load with 140's or 150's is a tack driver.

I also have an older six-shot Redhawk 357 Magnum & also a BFR in 357 which has about the same amount of steel around the cylinder. I have 2000 pieces of 360 Dan Wesson brass that I am waiting on through Starline and if & whenever they ship both guns cylinders will be reamed. Maybe if enough of us order another 1000 pieces it will get them to make it. Who are you having ream the cylinders to 360DW? I have a Freedom Arms 83 in .357 mag, I’ve been considering having it reamed to 360DW to avoid any chance of some FA ammo ending up in a GP100 or Security Six.
