Over the years there have been times that I have sold a custom revolver to friends here on the forum and years later been offered to buy the revolver back. Some times a gun comes home and some times it doesn’t. I was able to work a deal to trade for a custom I had commissioned years ago. Once I got the tracking info I called my local shop to give him a heads up about its arrival. As we were talking he mentioned he stumbled into an old 5 screw Smith and Wesson in 455 Webley. I immediately ask if it was a New Century triple lock and he replied he had no idea! How the heck can you be 70 years old, operate a small LGS and not know if you are holding one of the finest revolvers ever made! Needless to say I can’t wait to see the gun when I limp in tomorrow to do the paperwork on the gun coming home.

Unexplainable. A local to me shop sold a guy that I know, a 1866 winchester for 1000. It had been refinished long ago but otherwise authentic. One of the big auction houses got about 8000 for it. Just shows that even experts don't know.

I know the feeling.
Unfortunately I got more good looks than $$ so I can’t keep them all and continue to learn by experiencing these fine custom revolvers myself without turning some loose.
When they come back home it’s a sort of relief from the separation anxiety…..
What gun is it???

It is the long cylinder 45 Vaquero with octagon barrel and musk I. Grips and S&W rear sight gun.

My dealer that knew what guns were and always called when something up my alley came along moved to Tennessee. I found another shop and they are slowly learning. They still sell mostly plastic guns but are starting to get decent used guns in. They are always oohing and ahhing over the Linebaughs and Clements guns when they arrive or I ship them out somewhere.

I hope it is a first model just for his sake. I had serial number 164 triple lock for awhile but decided it belonged with a S&W collector rather than with a Ruger converter so it went to a new home. He said this one is missing a screw and a bother small part bug if will still be fun to see if it truly is a first model or one of the subsequent models.

WOW ! That is all kinds of purty. I remember going to my LGS when I got the heads up on the BSBH 454/480's. Had a pre model number code ? to give him. He denied there was such a thing, thought I was wasting his time. Argued to JUST MAKE THE CALL ! He didn't apologize. I asked for a 480, a 454 showed up. Another phone call, later a 480 with not as low serial number showed up. Grrr..

I have found that the gun shops in my area which are few, know virtually nothing about firearms. Boggles the mind! If I go into KC north of me they know even less.

When I found that gun David had already installed the rear sight but that was pretty much it. I sent it to Ben along with a 357 max cylinder and he took it from there. This also about the time I was introduced to the TLA guns so I asked Ben about doing a TLA/#5 type front sight. To be honest, the resulting front sight was not what I was anticipating and the fault was all mine. This was the custom gun that taught me that I can not expect a gunsmith to “look at my butt and read my mind “ as my dad used to say. I looked back at my notes and realized Ben built exactly what I asked for but what I asked for was actually different than what I had in my minds eye.
A valuable lesson learned in my part and one that I have kept in mind on subsequent builds. The plan on this one, once it gets out of background prison, is to work with Ben to change the front sight arrangement.
