My favorite 45 Colt is my Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan. I assess the Super Redhawk (GP100 / SP101 too) to be superior to Smith and Wesson in that I can do lighter springs / shims / file the hammer step at home which results in an amazing trigger pull. All the above being said, I have a S&W 25-5 and a 25 Classic too, more for aesthetics / I wanted one when I was a kid reasons. The Super Redhawk and S&W 25-5 are all oversized, but they shoot just fine with factory ammo. I guess nobody told them that they should be less accurate due to being oversized. -Stan

I still haven't felt a Ruger action as nice as a Smith, so for mild/mid range load the N frame gets my vote. I'll amen that.

Mmmm, long time since I posted but life has severely complicated life & then I made it worse by resuming formal ATA trapshooting competition. At any rate - my $.02 worth of opinion on DA .45 Colts- Properly dimensioned large frames as in S&W or bigger can be wonderful tools. This includes the Colt Anaconda, Ruger Redhawk(both factory & custom), Colt m1917 & rare Dan Wesson. Smaller framed Taurus well a good one can be great and lemons are lemons. The various Taurus Judges & S&W Governor - I personally use as compact .410 bore scatterguns. With careful bullet style/alloy/hardness selection & loading they can suprize you at limited range. While on them & .410 use@ point blank ranges can produce very devasting results on properly applied fine shot Or buckshot, with now out of production Rio 1/2oz. #12 shot or equivilamt reloads being great up close & personal ammo for leg-less vermin if you catch my drift! .410 slugs are a waste IMHO.
Unless the revolver in question had undersized throats relative to groove diameter- proper bullet/alloy & load has always delivered fine accuracy for me( only undersize throats I ever got into were in a particular brand of SA revolvers. Not knocking them either as it’s fixable. Contenders have been discussed even though not applicable to OP. Wouldn’t take anything for my original 8-3/8 Octogan in .45 Colt only. 10” .410 chambered & choked V/R barrel with bead sight is an upland game delight with WW or R-P 3” loads firing # 5, 6 or 7-1/2 shot as required

I've got a nice 5-1/2" stainless 45 barrel for a Redhawk. Soon as I find a donor 44, I plan to build a tight chamber 45 Colt. Why yes a donor 44. I am on the lookout for one as well!

bigbore5 nailed it. If you want a really accurate 45 in the Redhawk locate a 45 barrel & buy a 44 Redhawk or cylinder. I have a 45 Colt Mountain Gun that is a fine shooter, I've shown it before. I had it cut for moon clips & shoot handloaded 45 ACP's most times on steel & varmints. Dick A while ago Dick Thompson wrote how he had the cylinder of his S&W Mtn Gun in 45 Colt faced off to accept 45acp full moon clips. I then had the same done to my 45 Colt Mtn. Gun which has made it a more versatile revolver.....

I've a 25-13 Mountain Gun. Fantastic revolver, shoots the RCBS 45 270SAA into little groups. It's on the Do Not Sell list. Tough to find, probably expensive when you do, but they're worth looking at.

It had obvious signs of being carried and needed a cleaning. The price they were asking was more than I was willing to pay. I had picked up a 44 mag Mountain Gun a couple of weeks earlier. It was in excellent condition and a couple of hundred less than the 45 Colt. I guess the 44mag version sedated my Mountain Gun urge. I really like the look of the barrel profile, and whatever the weight reduction is. I compared it to my 4" 629, dash 5 I think. Maybe because of familiarity, I liked the in-hand feel of my regular 629. Looks wise the Mountain Gun wins to me.

My 4” Ruger 45 Colt/45acp RedHawk is a fine carry gun. I use a pancake style holster and the gun although heavy, wears nice and snug. Definitely my “best” DA 45Colt. In fact, it is my only DA 45 Colt but for the converted 1917 I have.
This RedHawk is quite accurate with all factory loads, Grizzly Cartridge ammo I have used, and my cast 250 grain, Speer 300 grain loads, and Missouri Bullet 315 grain loads. This said, the gun although factory equipped with 45acp moon clips does not like 45acp ammo. I get about 50% light primer strikes in that endeavor so I don’t mess with the 45acp.
Nothing special about the hammer/trigger… factory Ruger but it aint all that bad either. I picked this gun up used but 99% condition at a firearms collection estate sale about 2 years back. Paid just a hair over $800 and was thrilled at the price.
My favorite single action 45 Colt is my stainless Ruger 5.5” Bisley Blackhawk. This one has a fit and finish from the factory that is outstanding and the single action trigger is impressive although still factory. It’s a beautiful Ruger product and an exceptionally accurate 45 colt. The Bisley grip really helps tame hotter loads.

The 625 comes in two sub models, the .45 ACP (625-2) or .45 Colt (625-5) Both fine revolvers.

No one has listed a New Service yet..... one of the best shooting double action Colts. BTDT with S&W's, Colts, Rugers and others. All of them shoot well when you feed them ammo they like...... and I have done that.

I love my Ruger Redhawk 45/45 with the 4.2” barrel. Jack Huntington worked on the trigger and action, and it feels like a good S&W. It’s now my favorite revolver.

I started one and then I found out they RH now have 2 piece barrels…….much easier

Ones I've had good luck with are; ruger redhawk chambered in 45 colt only, S&W 26-1, 624-4, 625-5, 625-6, 45 Colt or ACP are probably the best bet for a 45 DA gun that works and is dimensioned properly. The redhawks that take both acp and colt are going to have compromises in chamber dimensions. The 25 smiths can have chamber throat issues as well as front sight issues. Never tried the 25-7 or 25-9. Pretty sure they got the chamber dimensions right, not sure about sights. Some of mine, along with a 586 38 special

I like my Smith 25-7 quite a bit, the 5" barrel just feels right. For those that are concerned with throat diameter these measure .452. I've never been too worried about oversize throats as I shoot cast bullets and just size them appropriately. That is a very very attractive DA. Wasn’t able to find any online at first glance. I want one!
