So I have quite a few 45 Colts, a couple Contender Barrels, a Lever Action rifle, & several single actions...
Today I looked at the Clemment's Converted HD posted in the links section, & it occurred to me I don't have a double action... what is out there in current guns, that might be reasonably added to my group???
I did a quick Gun Broker search... not sure how the Judges / Governors "actually" shoot 45 Colt ammo... I'm liking the S&W model 25 variants... not sure if stainless was an option there??? but saw a couple nice blued 6" revolvers... maybe I should have kept my Alaskan in 454 as a dedicated 45 Colt gun, but thinking I'd prefer 4 - 6" barrel on this one

My favorite is my S&W 25 6" Classic. It's rare that it has perfect dimensions for the 45 Colt. This includes .452" Throats...

Ruger made their Redhawk in 45 Colt. Different barrel lengths as well. Watch Gunbrokers and you should be able to find one. Expect to pay $1000-$1400

I've never had a Redhawk... so that might be interesting... also think there might have been some S&W mountain guns in both stainless & 45 Colt??? probably pretty rare... ( didn't see any in my search right now )... there was 4-5 various S&W model 25 variants in blued on there right now...

Also, watching others, only once saw a reasonable cluster on a paper man at 10 or 15 yards. While in New Orleans, I heard a merchant armed with a Taurus Judge, killed an armed robber; but, heard no details of incident, nor load used. Know a man who really likes his revolving carbine .410/.45 Colt. Reports far better performance than I’ve seen from the Judge. Believe he’s killed one or two domestic pigs, possibly a deer. He doesn’t use buckshot. David Bradshaw

FORGET THE 45/410 JUDGES AND GOVERNORS UNLESS YOU CRAVE AWKWARD, OVERSIZED HARDWARE - HAVE NO IDEA HOW THEY SHOOT WITH 45 COLT AMMO BUT THE ABSENCE OF GOOD INFO RE THEIR 45 COLT ABILITIES GIVES ME THE IDEA THAT AT BEST THEY MAY JUST BE "OK".
I LOVE N FRAME SMITHS AND HAVE SEVERAL IN 45 COLT, BUT THE BEST OF THE LOT IS A 4" SS 625 MOUNTAIN GUN, A BIT SNAPPY WITH FULL POWER "S&W LEVEL LOADS" (MY LOAD IS 10.5grs OF UNIQUE AND 250/255gr CAST BULLETS). I HAVE LOADED, AND HUNTED AFTRICA, WITH 454 EQUIVALENT 45 COLT LOADS IN FA MODEL 83 REVOLVERS AND USE A LOT OF RUGER ONLY LOADS IN RUGER SINGLE ACTIONS, SO, WITH THAT BACKGROUND, THE TOP LOAD LIMITATIONS OF S&W's DISAPPOINT. THE SMITHS MAY BE ABLE TO DO MORE THAN THE RECOMMENDED "S&W LEVEL LOADS" BUT YOU ARE PUSHING THE PLATFORM. IF YOU CAN LIVE WITH THE SMITHS LOAD LIMITATIONS, THEY ARE FINE REVOLVERS BUT THEY DO NOT ALWAYS COME FROM THE FACTORY "READY TO GO". THE PROBLEMS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED ARE PRIMARILY FRONT SIGHTS THAT ARE EITHER TOO TALL OR TOO SHORT AND CYLINDER THROATS THAT ARE TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL, 2 DOGS CAN HELP WITH THE LATTER, BUT TOO BIG AND YOU WILL HAVE TO GET A NEW CORRECT CYLINDER OR EXPERIMENT WITH .454, .455 BULLETS, i.e. LARGER DIAMETER BULLETS.
45 COLT REDHAWKS ARE AWESOME REVOLVERS, STRONGER THAN THE SINGLE ACTION RUGERS. RUGER HAS MADE 45 COLTS IN 4" (MAYBE 4.2"), 5.5" AND 7.5", SOME BLUE, MOST SS.

NOTE: THE 125th 25-3 SMITHS AND THE EARLY 25-5 SMITHS HAD NOTORIOUSLY OVERSIZED THROATS. Caveat: BUYER BEWARE.

There are stainless Smith & Wesson's in 45 Colt out there if you don't want to shoot full throttle loads. Here's a picture of my 625 Classic. I only own one Redhawk that I bought at auction.

Looked at a Ruger Redhawk 5050 & noticed it shoots both the 45 Colt, & 45 auto with moon clips... frame cylinder gap looks much tighter than most moon clip guns... is this picture deceiving, or are they doing something different www.ruger.com/products/redhawk/specSheets/5050.html

... & BTW... I have many more powerful guns at home... so normal "mid level" 45 Colt loads would be the proposed diet...

I don't mean to hijack, but are there Smiths of the 25 and 625 variety (to include the 45ACP variants) that are known to have right or tight throats across the board (I can fix tight)?

No guarantee but it is generally thought that throats got better on the models without the pined barrels. They lost the pin in 1982 midway thru the dash 5. But in the dash 6 they got the floating hand, so they got that issue for a couple of years.

I like my Smith 25-7 quite a bit, the 5" barrel just feels right. For those that are concerned with throat diameter these measure .452. I've never been too worried about oversize throats as I shoot cast bullets and just size them appropriately.

JUST IN CASE YOU NEED OR WANT A DIFFERENT FS, GET A REVOLVER WITH A PINNED FS. SOME BLUE, MOST SS, 45 COLT SMITHS HAVE PINNED FS's.

I still haven't felt a Ruger action as nice as a Smith, so for mild/mid range load the N frame gets my vote.
Not really what you asked, but the 45 ACP version is efficient, allows for much cheaper ammo, uses moon clips (or 45 AR cases) and can be hand loaded to match mid-range 45 Colt. I think it's the best of all worlds if you don't need the strength of a Ruger. If you don't hand load, there are commercial hot loads for the ACP that would fill the role.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in if the ACP version of the model 25 had better or similar dimensions to the 45 Colt versions.
