Just got my ruger blackhawk and am going to use it for a woods gun. Do you carry in a western style holster and cartridge belt, or a chest rig? Thank you

Both. I very seldom just carry a revolver because I carry all the time. Running coyote traps I use to carry my Single Six in a crossdraw holster, it works best for sitting in a side by side. I carry my .41 mag in a Double D Denali chest holster and it also fits my FA Model 83 very well. I haven’t bought one yet for my Super Blackhawk Hunter but I’m sure it will be another Denali. My .44 Spec Flattop also rides in a crossdraw holster.

I USUALLY FIELD CARRY A 5.5" RUGER BISLEY OR SIMILAR SIZED REVOLVERS AND USE A GUNBELT AND HOLSTER. I LIKE 2.5" WIDE BELTS BEST AND A STRONG SIDE HOLSTER. WHEN BLACK BEAR HUNTING IN ALASKA, BECAUSE OF THE FOUL WEATHER CLOTHING, I USE A DIAMOND D CHEST HOLSTER FOR A 5.5" REDHAWK OR A 6" FA MODEL 83.

I didn't see where you are at but your terrain and vegetation are going to tell you. Going up and down steep inclines a crossdraw "can" put the hammer spur in your gut (if you are built like me). A "gunfighter" drop leg rig will slap back and forth on long walks till you want to throw it down a canyon and tell everyone you lost it fighting off something wanting to eat you. A strong side "high ride" is ideal for me in summer but doesn't make the cut in heavy long coats. A chest rig is something I have not tried yet but I am not casting shade on it one bit. Just something I haven't tried.
I am currently carrying a Ruger New Model Vaquero in 45 Colt, 3 3/4 barrel in the 5 O'Clock position in a holster made for the Smith N Frame revolvers. It has double loops and is a pancake style that holds the butt of the revolver nice and tight to my fatback and is quite handy.

I use Barranti Leather. Which model depends upon my activity I'm engaged in.

Depending on the gun I use crossdraws by Mike Barranti or Thad Rybka , strongside with retention straps by Rybka or a shoulder holster by Rybka.

Almost always a Northwest Hunter shoulder rig by Barranti or a cross draw by Barranti. If it's warm weather & I'm not wearing a cover garment & I'm walking then a lot of times I'm wearing a Barranti strong side rig with a leather hammer strap.

For me, it makes a big difference of the barrel length... I carry a custom single action snubbie every day, in a higher riding concealed carry holster on a good gun belt at 4-5 o'clock, depending on the belt loop placement... my longer barrels, definitely a chest holster... 4-6" barrels often in another belt holster, strong side specific to the guns

Sixshot's NW Hunter is why I now own several Barranti shucks. I too enjoy it a LOT,,, for my bigger handguns. And I also use a couple of Doc's crossdraw holsters for my shorter barrelled guns. Ans I too have strong side belt rigs to compliment my needs at other times. In short; "What he said!"

I carry every day, everywhere. How I carry depends on the weather (clothing). In the warm weather I carry Glocks in plastic Fobus on the strong side. On the horseback (in the warm weather), I carry SA revolver in the chest Hunter rig. In the vehicle I carry cross draw (if it's auto I'm carrying, I carry in Blackhawk holster), if it's .44Mag SA I carry cross draw in Texas Leather rig. Since we have constitutional carry, there is no worries whether the weapon is "printing", showing, open, or concealed.
Funny (but true), few months back I had to go to the County Assessor's office (with my .357 in a cross-draw rig, just showing its butt from under my sport coat). A deputy walked up to me, and politely informed me that "they changed the law recently" (like a month before that), and I am supposed to leave the weapon in the car. I went out and put the weapon in the car. Unlocked car. We don't lock cars, or homes here. Everyone is armed, and there is no crime.
County is the size of some small countries in Europe and has six deputies to "police" it. Police response to my property is measured in hours, not minutes. Of course, we're all armed. We can still carry in the church, grocery stores (and any other store), restaurants, and bars.

I wear overalls all the time, Haven't found any comfortable belt holsters to wear. Have learned to like chest holsters and Doc made me a Croft style shoulder holster that doesn't require a belt to hold down on the off side. It swings with you, but tucks in to the side or under a coat and carries well.

Barranti belt holster for hip carry or a Hill People Gear Kit Bag for chest carry.
