next year i want to try a 10" Contender in 45 Colt with cast boolits. other than 357mag, 44 mag/spl and 45 Colt, what do you use on deer at 60 yards or less? 60 yards is about as far as i can see in the woods, atho there is a chance to see 100-125 yards, but that's rare.
i handload and re-form brass.

Not a lot of bad options here.
If sticking with cast bullets, the 357 Max is probably the easy button. 38-40, 357 herett, 357 B&D, any of the supermags, etc. For my time and money, the benefits of carbide dies, straight walled cases, and bullet selection leads me to the Max. Second choice would be the 44 mag probably. A 2x Leupold will really help when light fades and those 100 yard opportunities arise.

NOT SURE I UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION IN THE OP. I USE A 10" ROUND BARREL (vs. THE OLDER OCTAGON) CONTENDER IN 45 COLT. I WAS SURPRISED BY ITS ACCURACY. I USE A 275gr SWC PC'ed HP SUPPLIED BY SIXSHOT. WINCHESTER CASES, WINCHESTER "USA" MATCH WLP PRIMERS AND 19grs OF 2400 GIVES ME AROUND 1,330fps. I HAVE A FIXED 4X LEUPOLD PISTOL SCOPE ON IT. EASILY A 100 YARD DEER GUN.

.30-221 with the name of your choice works well.

Mid 90s built 300 Whisper is marked 30-221 as is my Redding die set... FWIW wasn't the 30 Herrett developed for a 10 inch barrel?

As my handle suggests,, I'm a T/C Contender fan. The 10" .45 Colt will be just fine for deer hunting. A good quality cast bullet in a SWC design, (I prefer a Miha mold) and powder coated,, running anywhere from about 900 fps to upwards of 1200 fps will anchor whitetails easily. Let your Contender decide what load it likes & go hunting!

The tapered bull 10” barrel probably configured for IHMSA Production category competition. Early silhouetters beat themselves with T/C’s tapered octagon, a handsome configuration which Warren Center told me was laborious to produce. The Super 14 bull 14” barrel was configured for competition in the Unlimited category, which had a maximum 15” barrel and 15” sight radius. The .44 Mag recoils stiffly in the low bore axis Contender, especially with early wood grips. The Pachmayr Signature made recoil much more manageable. Pachmayr followed with a Gripper for the Contender, by far my favorite Contender handle, as well as my favorite of all Pachmayr Gripper configurations. Reckon a .45 Colt hopped-up in the Contender lets you know when it goes off. The .45-70 certainly bucks. The .357 Herrett made widespread appearance on early silhouette firing lines, numerous shooters stoking cast bullets. Recoil can be a beast with the .357 Herrett, which diminished the round’s popularity as the Rocks & Dynamite era subsided. As Potatojudge affirms, numerous Contender chambering have what it takes for deer. The .357 Maximum allows practice with .357 Mag and .38 Special, just check individual barrel for accuracy. First stranger I encountered on a mountain packing a Contender had a Super 14 .30-30 slung cross draw on his hip via a carpenter’s hammer ring. Tall, broad-shoulder gentleman, still-hunting deep in the hardwoods, far from the nearest road. He had the factory iron sights. Note on Contender .30-30: high accuracy from barrels I’ve shot. Virginia silouetter and IHMSA All-American Josie Engel set the Production Standing record with her bull 10” Contender. Ball powders are particularly loud in the 10”, with Hodgdon BL-C2 (Ball C-2) flashing a yellow ball in sunlight, rocking your skull like concussion grenade. David Bradshaw

i "think" i'll load the the 45 Colt (250-300gr SWC or WFN) to about 800-900fps, but a 1000fps won't upset me. i've learned (MY GOD!!! I ACTUALLY LEARNED SOMETHING!!!!) that hyper-velocity rounds are bullpoop. i figure that my great great parents would kill game at black powder velocities, its good enuff fer me.
i have killed deer with a Ruger SRH (7.5" barrel) and SBH (4 5/8" barrel) in 44 mag/spl using 200-240gr Hornady XTP (SRH) and 250 - 280gr cast boolits (SBH). back in the early '90s, i thought that velocity was King and i loaded up my SRH hot. now i load my SBH to 44 spl with 250gr penta hp and Skeeter loads. it still kills deer.

If you run on to a Super 14 in 41 Mag....BUY IT. It is superb for what you are wanting to do.

If you like spot and stalk the 10 inch is a better handling and packing barrel than the 14 inch. It does give up some velocity to the 14 in but when scoped gives up nothing in accuracy. It is also much better off hand for me than the 14 in.

.357 maximum. It’s the only Contender barrel I kept.

I have 2-10” 45 Colt barrels one round, and later found an old unfired octagon…. I actually put a set of Williams fire sights on the round, just for deer hunting, and have a pretty warm cast bullet load developed just for hunting big Minnesota white tails… I have used 45-70 (started handgun hunting with that 14” ) then went to a 10” 30-30, and my newest best yet, is that 45 Colt

I'm interested in a 10-12" Contender Barrel in 45 Auto Rim. Possibly with an extra extractor so I can use 45 ACP/45 Super as well...

Todddoyka I would put the shot thru both shoulders with a wide meplat cast or hp 250-300 gr. I shot a big doe with my 480 and a 350 gr wide meplat cast and in the first 40-50 yds she bled very little. By then she was in the really thick stuff where She started to leave a better trail. She went around 125-150 yds. I had shot her very well, she just took a long run to expire. Thus the recommendation to break both front shoulders. No real experience with cast just the one, everything with my .45's have been with jacketed bullets.
