With anything much above 32 caliber, or anything much over 15 to 20 grains of powder, if you hit anything below the head you won't eat much squirrel. The bigger bores will work fine for head shots. I hesitate to throw a big piece of lead over 32 cal. skyward anymore, given how crowded our world is getting. I use a 32 and 15 gr powder when I squirrel hunt. It doesn't take as much powder as most people think to make a small bore black powder rifle shoot accurately.

Thinking the same thing in 32 or 36 and a forum member over on CB who builds f locks recommended a Kibler kit to me in a 36 or 40 cal.

I bought a used 32 Caliber flintlock back the 1st primer shortage I went through… nothing fancy or expensive… was amazing how accurate it was… now I’m well stocked in primers, I rarely shoot it, but can see no reason to ever get rid of it either… had always heard I wouldn’t like the “hang fire” effect of a flintlock, but mine was always minimal, and I had no problem shooting it well

Neat ! My BP rifle also a 54 Lyman, and accurate. Killed a few deer with it. Patched round ball. The squirrel rifles.. long and lean, elegant to my eye.

Jim makes a really nice kit from what Ive seen, I really want to use one of his CNC locks and triggers for a build one day (most others are cast parts, still great but need a little smoothing/stoning)

I've been wanting a Kibler kit for awhile now. They are really well made and ready to go.

They tell me Grandpa would "bark 'em" could eat it from head to tail then, the head was a popular treat.

Cheeks and brains. Cheeks fried, brains in scrambled eggs. Used to use a 36 cal flinter. 36 is a little more forgiving on ramrods than 32 but regardless a synthetic rod is nice. Impaled hands and forearms not so much. If using a 45 just bark em.

Absolutely you need one! Built a .36 cherry stocked SMR last Spring/Winter. Well worth the time and expenditure. Fire blued a few components, rust blued others, left the lock in the white and laid on a few layers of boiled linseed oil on the cherry. I'm pleased. Shoots and handles well.
Looks to have a short wait on the SMR for the moment, unless you want one of their one off ready to go stocks (ash or maple at the moment).
This was my first built, it went easily and I feel confident to tackle another.

I shot a squirrel with my Marlin 45 Colt Cowboy one time. Used a 255 grain RCBS SWC. Wasn't a head shot and it ruined no meat what so ever. That's discounting the 45 hole through him. Yes I did it safely.

The first thing I ever killed with a pistol was a Fox Squirrel siting on a limb facing me at 125 yds. Shot him with a T/C Super 13 .41 Mag with a 2x Leupold. Hit him under the chin and it was one of those “cleaned and gutted him” in one shot deals. All the meat was intact
