What is the 400 represent in 458-400? And how would one of those cases with a 458 bullet instead of a 452 stand up against a hot 45?

Bullet weight...

I believe it was popular back before we had a good selection of heavyweight bullets for the .452 size. It probably is on par with a 454 or 45LC 5 shot. Popular is probably a poor choice of words, it was developed to use heavy bullets.

A few years ago I'd had a conversation with Jack regarding plans for a vintage big bore .458" project
There was a piece of 458 barrel material on the bench that had been bored on his rifling machine that had been the seed crystal for the discussion
Jack produced a couple of cartridges from a tooling drawer
They were cut 45-70 brass with 458 bullets He called it the 45 Harris
Seemed perfect for my ideas as I wanted to make up a wheelgun for use with paper patched bullets
He opened a different drawer and produced two chamber reamers, one marked 45 Harris and I think the other was marked 458 Harris
Jack noted that John Gallagher had a good bit of history with the cartridge, and that it was a shop specialty at his outfit. Jack thought that Ed Harris had earlier history with the cartridge, but felt that for all intents and purposes "it was a John thing"
I'd thought about calling John and asking if he'd be fine with me putting together a wheelgun in that chambering at our shop, but things had been busy and I don't tend to put my projects before the client guns - and then time got the better of the conversation.
I still have the donor gun. Those reamers are still in the drawer. I'll be getting on that project sooner or later.
Maybe I'll snap a photo of the cartridges and the reamers for the sake of this thread
That's a great looking revolver and someone should be a happy fellow to get it

Just looked at those cartridges, both 1.4" cut 45-70 cases
There are three reamers Two marked 45 Harris One marked 451 Harris IMP The 45 Harris reamer that I measured has a pilot for a .458 throat
All three of them are JGS reamers

I recall seeing something similar in the Barnes, Cart. of the World book, years ago, 45 Silhouette or 458 Silhouette.

When Harris left the room, Jack ended up with a sizable bit of his tooling
One of his small ballpeen hammers is a daily companion in my workspace

The point of this sidebar is to salute that cool revolver
From what little is seen and said in the auction description, there's a great opportunity for someone on a wheelgun from the hands of a super talented craftsman, in a really cool vintage big bore cartridge that has a history of it's own
The three grand starting price would be a steal
