There aren't very many of those around. John made those in the early days before the 475 components were readily available. Dies are not easy to run across either. I think the brass was cut down 45-70 but I'd have to double check that. I think the goal of the cartridge was to equal the old 4570 round in a handgun. That gun has been for sale for a while.

This would be Zeus's pocket rocket in the long configuration. Very hard not to just do 454 Casull for that kind of money.

I have the Handloader article on the round from the late 1990s. I'll try to dig it up tonight. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Wasn't there a thread on the 458-400 on this forum a while back? I think there were even pictures.

Handloader had a writeup on this round. From: .458-400 Express, J. Kronfeld, Handloader #187, June 1997
This was developed as a revolver cartridge by John Gallagher for use in a recylindered Ruger Blackhawk. The goal was a 400-grain cast or jacketed bullet at 1300 fps. The .45-70 case is shortened to 1.4" and used without neck-reaming. Hodgdon H110 was the only powder that gave the performance desired, but no load data was included in the article. Ballistics were about 10% better than the .475 Linebaugh.

It's very similar to my 458 Devastator. Performance from both is strong, but not enough to make you trade in your 454. When I designed my 458 back in '93 or '94, 454 brass was still expensive and only offered thru Freedom Arms. The Devastator can be made from old belted magnum brass (ones with split necks, bad shoulders, etc). Other than the bullet being 0.006" bigger, these 458's duplicate the Casull. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I just clicked on the link in the first post and, shockingly, the gun from 2011 had sold!
