I think to be fair to FA they could certainly never have predicted the ammo/component issues we are in today. Under “normal” circumstances someone like Starline probably would have picked up production of the brass by now. But we are certainly not in normal times and who knows when that might be again. The supply issue for the WE brass precedes the COVID "global supply chain crisis" by a long shot. If FA had wanted to they could have had more brass made to support the cartridge. They didn't, They haven't. There's no brass. RCC brass will make it for a few bucks a piece. "Scarce..!" -- that makes it collectible, right..?

But, we live in a blameless society. Every event is somebody or something else's fault.
Nobody can ever accept that they might be at fault. It's just not the way people think.
I still smile at the BFR 500 JRH. It easily shoots 500 Special, 500 JRH or shortened 500 S&W with zero modifications. Had auxiliary cylinders built for both in 50 A.E. It's difficult to sideline these guns.
Love FA Products, but this call was a serious uh-oh...

I think when they offered the 475L in the 83, it spelled DOOM for the older bigger brother……..or I assume the 500WE came first. Personally I think the 454C is a damn near perfect global handgun hunting caliber, they should have just stopped there with in house development. If the 500WE came after the 475L,………why did they even bother???
I have owned one round that needed more than a simple neck enlarging to make brass for, it’s not something I wish to repeat. I feel for the 500WE users, it looks like a back up cylinder may be the “best” option.

Trapr The 475L did indeed come first and at the time was touted in The Five Shot Journal as the new King of the Hill.

Drama, is actually the name of a little town in Greece, been there, had lunch, and don’t care to spend much time there,……….True story!! It’s a pity so many spend so much time with drama in their lives.

I sort of figured by now there would be some screaming deals out there on used 500WE guns but that doesnt seem to be true either… I've got my fingers crossed it won't be too much longer.

Seriously though, for a few bucks a case from RCC, every WE gun can run for not much money
500 caliber revolver cases last forever
Twenty pieces of brass and you're off to the races

85 posts about 500 WE in a few days. This cartridge hasn't seen this much activity in ages! I like it.

Yes RCC will Make you brass but at $4.50 each having a new cylinder in 500jrh is the less expensive option and simpler long term answer. I seriously pondered a 500WE for a time, played with a buddies gun and liked it. Ultimately decided it wasn’t enough different from my 475 to justify adding to the safe when I had small children in the house and more going out most months than I did coming in.

the special would avoid the ego issues and would only require a little reamer work to be a jrh. 500 Special has the same rim diameter as 500 S&W Magnum, no good for the 83 The 500JRH has smaller rim diameter - which works in the 83 That's why I said they should also be talking to Starline about small rimmed brass

The 475L was based on the 45-70 case Which came about because of the shortage of 348W brass to make 500L, who's later popularity brought about the 500WE. A circle. I paid $5 a case for 577/450 brass at one time. Sure didn't like doing it. But it was more palatable because I was never going to go shoot 40, 60, 100 rounds at a time like I might with a revolver.

We need the ATF to change the 1/2" bore restriction so we can all get .577 Redhawks...
