Yesterday evening I was able to take, what is a trophy to me, a black coyote. This is only the second I’ve ever seen in the wild. I was hunting a mature buck on my lease and managed to call in a pack of coyotes. I had just finished a series of rattling/grunting followed up by some doe bleats, when a pack of coyotes showed up looking for supper. I’m not sure how many there were, for I was focused on the first one in - black dog. He stood still long enough for me to feed him some of Elmer’s finest at 75 yards. The 255gr powder coated Keith bullet pushed by 20.0gr of 2400 found its mark behind the shoulder of the broad side pose. This is the third mark for my TLA #5 44 mag. I did manage to sling some hail Mary lead at a couple others, but I didn’t even take the time to look and see if they connected. This makes the third time in my deer hunting escapades over the years, that I’ve called in a pack of coyotes while calling for deer. It may sound crazy, but I was shaking as if I was looking at a 180” buck! Shaking so bad, I was actually surprised I connected!

Never seen a black one around here... these 2 shot off of our property, 2 years ago... the bigger one on the left, was shot in the field, at the edge of our front yard... these shot by a group of guys that drive the section roads during the winter, with long range rifles, they have permission to drive in the fields... we don't want them around here with sheep & chickens... they usually get 40-50 yotes per winter around our neighborhood... That black one is a beauty... are you doing a mount, or at least tanning the hide???

Yes, it will get mounted in some fashion. I’ve been seeing a fox squirrel with a black head on this same lease that I’m planning on hunting later. My son suggested mounting the coyote in a setting position with the squirrel in its mouth. I’m liking the idea, but I’ve got to kill the squirrel first.

I can’t say I have ever seen or even heard of a black coyote but that is a cool trophy. Where I elk hunt has some really beautiful black, silver, and red foxes that are spectacularly furred I just wouldn’t shoot one while elk hunting and spoil the elk hunt.
But I will say that TLA seems to be growing on you.

A trophy for sure, in my eyes. Been trying to get the guys at camp to put some focus on coyote control. We have a known den ! Here, where I live, 3 packs within hearing.

That is a neat trophy yote for sure. I saw a black one cross a logging road in front of me while I was walking out of the woods one morning. I took a couple of steps forward to catch sight of him again and saw black standing still about 50 yards through the woods. I shot and was surprised that it didn't move. As I walked up to it I realized I had center punched a black stump. Never saw the yote again.

A trophy coyote taken with a trophy six gun, can’t get much better than that.

Nicely done! I have a black squirrel up our cabin that hung around all deer season if he needs something to chase on the mount

Squigz, those black squirrels are handgun trophies, as well. I have two black and one chocolate colored fox squirrels that reside on my walls.

Not only a great trophy but great shooting as well! Good job Kim! Thanks, Robb. To make those iron sighted shot these days, I have to slip on a pair of Walmart 1x readers. The front sight is too fuzzy without them.🥴 It’s proving to be a real pain in the rear! I know now what y’all seasoned hunters have been dealing with.
