I have a lot of front fiber optic sights and the rear peep sight “O” replacing the rear v notch or blade. It is amazingly quick sight acquisition, almost like young eyes again!

Kral that is a nice yote for sure. What state do you live in? I'm in the mountains of northeaster TN and we have some black mountain lions running around.

Kral that is a nice yote for sure. What state do you live in? I'm in the mountains of northeaster TN and we have some black mountain lions running around. I’m in north central MS. As stated, this is the second black (melanistic) coyote I’ve seen, but I’ve also seen two black (melanistic) bobcats - didn’t have gun when these were seen. I’m wondering if what you seen was a melanistic bobcat - never heard of a melanistic mountain lion?

The ones that we have seen have a very long tail, no tuffed ears, and long body like a mountain lion. We've had the cats for quite some time and NC released a few of them years ago to take care of the large deer herd. TN is kind of funny. Even though an animal is supposedly not known in the state you can't kill them. Now TN recognizes we do have mountain lions. They don't say anything about killing yotes, which we have some pretty large ones with exceptionally long legs according to my Idaho friend, or killing wild boar. Both they encourage to kill, but tell you best to leave the boar lay as they carrying lots of diseases. Now we don't have boars in the mountain areas. May be our really huge black bear population keeps them a bay. You may be correct though as I myself haven't seen them. My neighors have. We do have a huge Bobcat population in my area thought. According to the internet black mountain lions don't exist especially in TN.

Nice shot man! THAT is the kinda stuff I get excited about myself too. KILL THAT SQUIRREL! That will make an awesome mount. When I was in my early twenties we kicked out a black coyote deer hunting pushing creeks. We all figured it was crossed up with a dog or sumthin, but I see more and more guys killing them around the country on the predator forums now. I've never seen another one since in the wild. I've seen a few monster bobcats around here, and as you mentioned, one of the ones I missed my one chance at was a black one. It was hunting a mud road in deep snow I was using to get to trapline. Two other guys saw it and none of us ever got a shot off at it and nobody ever did catch it. One of my cousins got an albino cottontail several years back and got it mounted. My personal oddball is a white/gray hen turkey off the place I grew up on. A thread for just pics of nature's rarities like your black coyote, white turkey, funky squirrels etc. would be cool. I'll try to start it if I get time but everyone else feel free to beat me to the punch.

Black squirrels are very abundant in swamps in MS. But in all my years down there tromping around I only saw ONE black yote. Nice shooting and great trophy Kim!

Kudos on getting a rarer color variation of the PIA coyotes! Doing so with a fine handgun is icing on the cake.
I've killed a pair of them deer hunting this year,, with a few more around the area. (Not on the same day.) Both of mine were taken right near dusk,, so pics weren't taken. Drug the dern things with my 4 wheeler to my pit.
And since folks are talking of color variations,, I just picked up a second white squirrel on Christmas day in one of my traps. It too will be mounted.

While deer hunting one morning, about 30 years ago, I seen a pair of white squirrels. All I had in hand was a 30/30 Contender, so I just set and watched. I hunted those squirrels the rest of the season and never seen them again - another hunter, hawk, bobcat, fox…. I don’t know?.?.?

KRal,, I live in an area where white squirrels are MUCH more common. A town nearby,, (Brevard NC) has a white squirrel festival annually. So far,, all the ones I've seen,, and could check have a very small amount of black or gray fur, usually along the top of their back. Sometimes hard to see. They are not albinos.
In my business,, I deal with animals. Trapping is part of my business. I caught one several years ago at an assisted living facility,, and had it mounted. This year,, it was an accidental/incidental catch in a trap for a groundhog. That doesn't happen often. But when we were there setting the groundhog trap,, my helper said he saw a couple of them across the street. The homeowner said they had several in the neighborhood too. Heck, I had someone ask for a white squirrel years ago when I mentioned I had one mounted. Way too long ago to remember.
A black coyote isn't common,, and often considered a prize by most. Serious yote hunters & trappers do get one from time to time. You can be PROUD of getting yours!

Decades ago I saw an all red or burgundy fox squirrel when we were dove hunting and I could see farther, I ran after him like crazy but never caught up. I've seen one solid black other than that.

The thing that woke me up about squirrels is when my best friend and I were teens we shot a red squirrel that has a half eaten bird in it's mouth! Then I knew why they called them tree rats. Growing up in PA we had black, white, red, and gray squirrels. The one's in the mountains were huge. I'm in TN now and so far I'm not impressed with the squirrels here. They are very small chipmunk size.
