I bought a 10" 454 in 87 or 88 and it was a real eye opener, never thought you could harness so much power in a hand gun.

Does yours have the loud holes in the barrel? My older 83 has these devices and they help make a bright flash in case it's needed. The extra noise probably helps scare away the boogeyman too.
I can remember the first time I looked at the loading data FA has and thinking "you gotta be shiĀ„Ā„ing me". I learned the case can hold that much H110 and the revolver doesn't care (similar to the Honey Badger Youtube videos).
Some of the steel I shoot would be considered a mild steel but it is over 1" thick (typically shot at 600 yards with target rifles). When it's hit with the Casull at 50 yards with jacketed bullets, it'll get a slight dent. It's a heck of a round out of a ridiculously strong revolver. Not bad to shoot at all for all of it's antics.

Iām not sure when they first started getting distributed. Itās an FA83, so ā¦ā¦ I knew the owners of a few of the largest gun stores in the state. Weāre talking 10 counter guys, selling guns as quick as they could write them up. So they were able to acquire two of the first .454ās available. One brother picked up one, and I was able to purchase the second one. I was immediately impressed with the lock up, and power. Just a killinā machine. They make me look like a good shooter! I can appreciate that. Iāve had probably 10, but down to 4 now. If I could only have one gun to hunt with, without a doubt, this is it.

I AM A NEWBIE TO THE MODEL 83 454, DID NOT GET MY FIRST UNTIL 1990 OR SO. COST AROUND $1,000 AND I REMEMBER MY HAND TREMBLING AS I WROTE THE CHECK SINCE I HAD NEVER PAID SO MUCH FOR ANY GUN BEFORE. I HAVE HAD ALL 5 OF MINE FITTED WITH XTRA 45 COLT CYLINDERS. ON MY LAST 10 AFRICAN SAFARIS, AND ALL OF MY ALASKAN BEAR HUNTS, THEY WERE MY PRIMARY HUNTING REVOLVERS. STILL USE THEM A LOT DURING DEER SEASON. LOVE 'EM, CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT THEM.

My one & only FA is a Premier grade 454 w/o ports. I was privileged to get it from a fine gentleman who needed a specific amount of money for his house project,, and didn't need that much power in a handgun. He allowed me to become the next caretaker of it. Full power loads do tend to be quite impressive. Yet the gun handles them just fine. I found a handload that mine likes at a not quite so powerful,, and it's a heck of a shooter for sure. While many of the bigger bore handguns may first appear to be harsher to shoot, I've found some to be more pleasant than the 454. Yet,, that 454 has it's proper place,, and is a very capable handgun for most applications. It's a favorite of mine as well. In fact,, it was my back-up gun on my last elk hunting trip. My primary was my El Dorado in 45 Colt. All this from a serious Ruger nut!

My only FA is one of their first runs of the 353 Casull. Loaded with some upper end Taffin data, I'd put it's muzzle blast up against any none ported 454! Ear splitting even with plugs. Iuse muffs always. Even though my 475 and 500 Linebaughs will easily surpass the 454's performance with less perceived recoil, I hope to find a 83 454 5" octagon eventually.

That is what I bought, the 5 inch octagon 454 with 45 colt spare cylinder. I only use starting 454 load data and 45 colt bullets. I dont need ALL that power down here in coastal South Texas and I dont shoot at game past 50 yards with a handgun. Now varmints are a different situation. I will fling a bullet at em from any range just for the fun of it. I did kill an alligator with it from 18 inches if that counts as hunting. 18 inches away and I was still worried I was going to miss.
