ALL MY MODEL 83 454's HAVE THE 4 MNP PORTS AND WEAR PACHMAYRS, MY 6 INCHER IS A BEAR TO SHOOT, WITH THE TWO 8-3/8ths", 10" AND 12" I HAVE NO RECOIL ISSUES. ----Ray ***** Good observation. While boosting velocity, a long er barrel soaks up the initial bunt of recoil. Recoil begins as the bullet accelerates down the barrel, while the physical push & punch of recoil registers after the bullet is long gone. An experienced shooter feels a slow powder which is too slow for the cartridge case or bullet as slow recoil. Some such loads produce phenomenal accuracy (example: .357 Speer 220 TMJ over compressed IMR 4198 in .357 Maximum), but are absolutely unforgiving of poor position or sloppy follow-through. The sensation of initial recoil takes longer to feel than to happen. Recoil of the same .44 Mag load varies by barrel length----4” kicks harder than 6-1/2”; 6-1/2” kicks harder than 8-3/8”----in the S&W M-29, further backing Ray’s experience recoil relative barrel length in the Freedom Arms M83. The Redhawk .44 Mag in 5-1/2” and 7-1/2” provides another graphic example the short barrel kicks. A longer barrel helps cushion the immediate impact of recoil, even as it elevates velocity. .44 Mag and .454 Casull share this characteristic. David Bradshaw
