slapped me in the face today. The rut is in full swing with the Blacktail bucks losing their normal nocturnal nature. The son and I went out today and to say it was raining is like a cow peeing on a flat rock would be an understatement. During the rut, the bucks running is directly proportional to the severity of the rain here in western Oregon. Today was no exception. We found a log to cross the raging creek and made our way into the thinned section we wanted to hunt and before we even got set up we spotted a doe and as we watched her, another doe and a nice mature buck came down the same trail. They were about 100 yards out and as I snugged up next to a fir tree and took out my binos to check them out the combination of body heat from my internal sauna, humidity you could drown in and the brim of my Seattle Sombrero led to instant fogging of the glasses and the binos. AS soon as Rem clacked the antlers together the buck did and about face and came right for us as if he was on the end of a salt water reel with Rem rolling the crank. Once he hit the opening in front of me he stopped about out about 40 yards facing me dead on.
That is when the perfect storm of steam, rain, 64 year old eyes and black sights in the timber came together and the only thing slayed was my pride. I guess the reality is my handgun hunting needs to shift to an optics equipped format in the future. Since both my scope equipped revolvers went to new homes this year I am going to switch to carrying one of the single shot rifles for the rest of this hunting season. Not my first choice but in light of the always marching band called age, the most ethical choice to ensure a clean kill and no wounding.

I feel your pain, I need to go get another prescription so I can continue using irons on both rifles and pistols. Until then it’s optics only.

I retired the contact lenses when the need for reading glasses and thus bifocals became mandatory. When I compounded that with the onset of type II diabetes and Covid limiting the ability to get the normal eye exams it results in a noticeable change in the vision situation. The good think is, no matter how much I dislike it, realizing there are things I can do to keeping pursuing animals as long as I am willing to adapt how I hunt.

Been there some time ago. What you need is sights you can see in gloomy conditions. Experiment with some white paint on your sights until you find something you can live with............... worked for me.

I have the white outline rear Bowen sights with a white line front on every pistol I.ve had built in the last bit for this very reason.
Keep up the good work buddy!

Robb, I've had to paint mine for years, black on black & then against a dark hide in the shadows is a tough task for any of us when we get older. I'm almost 77 & that black front sight disappeared a long time ago. I paint that front sight white & then bright orange or some other bright color. The white underneath helps make it brighter, without it your sights can appear dark in the late part of the day.

That’s a neat little gun, reminds me of Bradshaw’s shortie scoped FA.

PJ, thank you for the offer but the rut will wind down soon so I’ll just use one of my single shot rifles. Next year I will use Roy Fishpaws old model 41 he used to hunt whitetail with. It is getting a new octagon barrel and small mount that I have a little Trijicon to put on.

I will also be sending the 45 back to Ben to cut a vertical line and make it white. I’ll order a white outline rear sight from Bowen then sell the non outline sight if wears now.

Out of curiosity, can one just buy a white outline rear "blade" from Bowen, as opposed to the entire sight assembly?

Good point Odin, just not sure if he sells just the blades but I will call him and find out.
Follow up- Bowen does show sight blades being available so I will get the micrometer out to measure the blade height on the gun and get a white outline blade on order.

While I'm only 63,, my eyes are also showing me that I'm not quite as "accurate" as I used to be with iron sights. I've used optics for many years on my Contenders,, and I also (now) have several optic equipped handguns,, JUST because of the very things you mentioned. Don'tcha wish you had the time retirement offers,, along with the funds to play,, when we were young?
