Robb,
Feel your pain on the sight issue. I made a new front sight for my #5 with a gold bead so I could see it when I am in the timber. I still need to remove the rear sight blade and cut an outline around the notch to paint white to finish off the job. Blued sights are pretty much worthless in low-light conditions that we hunt in here. Even on a sunny day the thick timber I hunt is a little dark.
I have also reached the age where eyesight is starting to give me a little trouble. Listening close to those before me for good advice.

I think for me it going to be a matter of adapting my methods and tools to allow me to continue doing the thing I love which is being outside and hunting. And not letting my ego win the mental debate of “but that isn’t how you do it!!!!!” I have found that on a HG that a white outline rear and same FT sight wks or do the doc spot that sixshot says white base an orange over lay...Or a sawed off shot gun an #4 buck shot works well. Been experimenting with a T/C carbine in 327 FM an a 2x7 scope this is interesting if I can keep it very still...I wear Tri Focals and a diabetic...Life is a Bitch getting older...

as far as the getting older... my eyes are OK, what worries me, is my mom's side of the family all have tremors... at 61 I know I'll be getting them too... Since I was probably in my late 20's, people would often say to me "I don't know how you can shoot so good, shaking so much." My hands always have. As I've gotten older it's gotten much worse, in my left arm/hand especially, due in part to a neck issue. I used to be a great weak hand shooter, had one revolver that I ONLY shot weak handed. Now I have trouble holding a drink in my left hand without spilling it. A few years back I was shooting in a large pistol match and the RO saw how bad I was shaking, making ready to shoot. He starts telling me to calm down, relax, take it easy, don't be nervous. It kind of made me angry. I told him, it's not nerves, believe me I wish it was.

Dinner tonight is Blacktail tenderloin and noodles. Rem and I went back out to the property where my tag was valid and where I missed the buck last week and I packed my little single shot 7mm-08. WE hunted the perimeter of the property and saw several does which were valid on my either sex tag but I wanted to see if we could find a buck today since the rut is going. As we entered the woods we dropped our pack frames at the base of a tree and headed out to rattle peel our eyeballs. After circling the entire piece we were headed back down the same trail where I missed the big buck and just as we hit the exact spot where I missed, a doe and medium sized buck jumped out of the blackberries and headed down the trail through the trees. I got a couple of glimpses of the buck as he wound through the trees but there were not any clear shots so we decided to keep creeping down the trail and see if we could find them around the bend.
As we snuck forward I looked off to the left and saw one ear and half of the head of a deer watching us about 100 yards out in the timber. After some hard glassing we both could make out head gear but there was no way to get a shot since he was totally covered by trees except for the head and one ear. I decided to sneak forward keeping several trees between us and after making my way a few yards to the right I was able to just find a small window on the guys body which fortunately was right behind the shoulder. Being old I used the tree i was standing behind as a rest and the little rifle barked. Remington was watching behind me and said I hit him and he saw the buck go about 10 yards where he stopped broadside through a lane in the trees. I was able to sneak to a tree on the right and use a branch as a rest and hit him again and he did the classic hump up and jump into the air then take off behind a berry thicket once he landed. WE headed up that way with Rem going to where we last saw the deer when I took the last shot while I headed around the berry patch. I immediately found what looked like a blood fountain on the ground and there he laid. Anyone who doubts the effectiveness of the little 7 cartridge should see what it does when it goes where it should. I'd show a picture of the wound channel but frankly it is more graphic than I have seen in a long time on an animal.
It has been a good year so far. Both a buck and a a turkey for Remington and I with another turkey tag to go apiece. The best part is getting to spend the time in the woods with my son and for each of us to call in a critter for the other person.
On a side note, after my earlier post I had several members here offer to send my optic equipped handguns to use! Shoot, one was even the 414 I used to own and used to take my antelope! The generosity of our member is beyond measure.
