With all the fine customs on this forum I’m sure some of you guys have some tips for shipping your handguns to the talented smiths across the country. Are you shipping via UPS or taking to an FFL? My local shop wants $60 for the service, I think it’s about a wash with doing UPS.

Are they charging a transfer fee? Mine ships through USPS and charges me whatever shipping is, then whatever insurance is for said item.

Legally the FFL has to transfer the gun onto their books in order to ship from them.
Now, whether they charge you or not is a different question.
That's not a bad deal to use the FFL for $60

Well, its not an incoming transfer, but I think they have to put it on their books regardless. An incoming transfer is $30, which is about the going rate in Phoenix. Some charge less, but most are similar.

Of course when it comes back, they will/have to treat it like a new sale (acquisition, disposition, 4473)
I'd be quite happy with $60 out, even if they charged me another $30 coming in.
Last one I shipped cost me $130?

I shipped my last gun directly to the gunsmith. That way, they can ship directly back to you. Handy, that.

I've always used a UPS terminal. Our local ups store says they don't have the insurance to ship guns or ammo.

It's all a funny thing. I recently sent a Glock back to Glock they told me I had to send it FedEx or UPS overnight. I sent it second day priority 25% of their cost. Some guys will send the gun back to you, some guys want to send it to your FFL. Roy Fishpaw used to think if you took the cylinder out of a revolver it made it okay.

The 68 GCA let you send your gun directly to a gunsmith for work and him to send it directly back to the address it came from. I can't say if it is still that way as it has been a while since I did that.

Now u can state that the pkg contents are machine parts or such and choose a less expensive shipping time butttt if they lose the pkg there’s that can of worms! Also FedEx will require u use a ffl in the near future. So no more shipping the gun yourself to a smith or factory. Ups will be the only game in town and I’m sure they will price accordingly!

It is the frame that is the firearm so I would not try to send it via the post office unless you have an FFL

SHIPPING EXPENSES OF HANDGUNS HAS SLOWED DOWN MY SHIPPING HANDGUNS OFF FOR CUSTOM WORK. UPS MAKES YOU GO TO THE TERMINAL TO GIVE IT TO THEM, THEN SOME AGENTS INSIST ON NEXT DAY AIR (VERY EXPENSIVE) AND OTHERS WILL OK 2nd DAY AIR, ALL IN ALL A BIG PIA AND COSTLY TOO.
MY BEST FRIEND IS AN FFL, I THINK I AM GOING TO JUST LET HIM LOG IT IN, SHIP IT, GET IT BACK AND LOG IT BACK OUT TO ME, WITH MY ONLY COST BEING PRIORITY MAIL.

My local FFL only charges $25 plus actual shipping to send out a gun for a customer. Same $25 fee if you buy a gun and have it shipped to them for transfer to you.
