What's the opinion on brass grip frames? I like the look on some builds but I don't know if they are a pain in the butt to maintain or whether there are other downsides. I am looking at a 6 shot 45 colt oversized cylinder build in a similar configuration as the one attached. I am torn on a few details but I am basically hung up on whether to do the brass frame or not.

Won't have to worry about the finish wearing or getting scratched, can always be buffed out to a like new polish.

Maintenance is whatever you want it to be. Polished or dull or black or patina'd is your call. The upside is that when you scuff or rub the butt it'll polish right out same as stainless, but better looking on a blue gun.
They're a bit heavier for a given configuration, but unless you're doing a lightweight build it's not much different.
Aside from that, the best reason to do one is that Ronnie Wells makes configurations not available in blue steel, plus killer grips to match all at IMO a bargain price when you factor in grips.
If you're specifically asking about a Linebaugh brass frame as pictured, well, $8k stings a bit but they are gorgeous and his grip contouring looks awesome.

I heard someone mention brass grip frames/backstraps. I, for one, do like them on my guns. Goes well with dark walnut: Bob Wright Oh, and this Hy Hunter:

I am about to order a brass Bisley frame from Wells, have done a few stainless frames myself and THINK I have the ability to proceed with something I hope will turn out nice.

It's purely personal preference but I don't care for them. I love brass, copper or bronze on other things but not on revolvers.

I like them and the ability to re-polish is a plus. However sometimes they provide too much contrast for my taste when installed on a richly blued revolver such as the op, kevshell pictured. Prefer them on a revolver that more closely resembles bobwright's middle example. Maybe one not so high polished on a rust blued revolver would look nice. Perhaps most striking is on a CCH cylinder frame where the mating edges are yellow to match the brass grip frame, There have been a couple of nice examples of that posted to this forum in recent months. CraigC's avatar has some of that going on. I don't know how you get CCH like that - thought the pattern was all luck of the draw. It would be tough to have to send your revolver to Turnbull 10 times to get the pattern you're looking for!
Of course this is all personal taste. Nothing said was black and white - right or wrong.

I was unsure of doing the grip frame and grips, and the first one took a long time, doing it all by hand. The second one, I clamped in a vice, and used an automotive DA sander, which is 20X faster, and still fine results. The quality of the starting fit, of RW parts, and ease of just bolting it on( grip panels too) makes it easier than I thought possible. Go for it.

Thanks guys. I have the donor and it makes it more difficult that I am very picky about what I like. The brass grip frames are something I just can't decide on. Blued is always classic and might stick with that. Possibly I'll go to a CCH frame as I want something beyond blued to distinguish it.

I am down to just a couple brass grip framed guns but it is still something I really like the looks of. The lower gun ahs not been polished out yet but once it returns form Zanes with the snakewood grips then I will shine it up.

Like so many things, it's a highly subjective matter. For most it seems to be the "something different" treatment...I myself think brass looks outstanding & quite proper on 19th century firearms, but not so much on modern guns. I DO like the look of stainless grip frames on blued guns & have several so done...It's just a personal taste situation.
