Hey Lee- Is that a nailhead in that coupe? Kinda hard to see but looks suspicious 🤔 You have a good eye. It is a nailhead. And there's a neat story behind that motor. In high-school, my dad worked summers in our family's Buick dealership outside of Pittsburgh. He cut his teeth on nailheads and Dynaflows. Around that time a local mechanic stuck a 364 in a '32 Ford coupe and it flew. Dad never forgot that car. Fast forward from the late 50's to the 2000's. I always wanted a chopped and channeled '33 with a vintage engine. Dad swayed me on the Buick nailhead because they built tons of low end torque (60's era 401s made 445 ft/lbs at 2,800 rpm). I thought, light car plus that much twist.... We started looking for a nailhead and kept hitting dead ends. Then my dad remembered his oldest friend had an Riviera on some land of his. Basically a parts car. We called him about whether he still had the motor. He answered, "I do. Which one do you want?". Turns out he had two. A 401 from a '62 Invicta and a 425 from the Riviera. The 401 had been garage kept, so I went with that. Dad took the 425 and rebuilt it years later. We tore it down and had to sleeve two cylinders. The others took 0.060", so it's now a 414 CID. The heads were decked pretty heavy and ported & polished. Compression was bumped to 12.5 so it takes more than pump gas. It's cammed with Schneider's 'biggest' solid lifter grind. High duration, high lift, and very tight lobe separation. Sounds nasty, especially through open exhaust (the car has straight pipes; no mufflers or baffle inserts). Then there are the carbs. The manifold is the old Offenhauser pattern with a very small cross passage from the main to secondary plenum. As a result, you run both carbs with straight linkage (no less than 4 barrels all the time). Everything is mated to a Borg Warner Super T-10 and 9" Ford w/3.89 gears. Really fun car to drive, especially when it weighs 2,300 pounds and has slicks out back. It's not hard to put air under the front tires. Active in our church. I am an ordained baptist deacon and do some lay preaching occasionally. Unlike snyd, I have no musical ability whatsoever. I don't even play the radio well. I retired in 2013 from Alaska DOC. I took early retirement to get out of the political mess and leave the stress. I took a job in oilfield security and worked at that until last fall when I retired to spend time my wife. It was a few years earlier than planned but she has a progressive medical condition. We wanted to spend time together now while we can enjoy each other instead of me chasing dollars right up until the time I had to quit to be a full time caregiver. I have a small sawmill and spend some of my days chasing logs to feed the mill, which feeds my woodworking hobby and gives me a little extra income from selling lumber and beams. We garden quite a bit and of course hunt and fish.
The mill before we poured the pad
The mill on the 16x36 pad.
A big cottonwood coming up the hill with the assistance of a few snatch blocks and the tractor.
One of the big logs finally up. I was 32 feet to the crown, 30 inches on the big end, 20 on the small end. I cut three feet out at 18.5 feet because of a crooked spot.
Some will turn their noses up at cottonwood but it makes good structural lumber, as long as its kept dry. I cut a fair amount for beams for myself and customers. I am going to build my sawmill shed entirely of cottonwood to show folks it can be used. It also makes beautiful T&G paneling. I've done quite a bit for cabins. When finished it ages to a nice honey color.

Retired almost three years now... Reload and shoot when the weather is nice. Other hobbies are military history and paleontology. Spend a lot of time babysitting two Labrador Retrievers. Zero interest in any kind of post retirement employment...had enough of that.

SS is a total sleeper ( until you hit the muffler bypass button, put it in track mode & wake up the 425 HP LS-3 I always loved those cars. As you noted, complete sleepers. How many did Holden make? And how many made it to the states? I suspect the number is low because I haven't seen many on the streets in the past 6 or 7 years. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Ball park of 1200 per year, 2014 was unimpressive, though they are a V-8 rear wheel drive car, auto tranny only, no mag ride control...2015 got a manual tranny & the Magnetic ride control... 2016 was supposed to be the last year, which is why I ordered then, but they decided to make 2017 the last year.... each year got a few more goodies... 2016 got functional vents in the front end to cool the front brakes, and functional vents in the hood to let heat out from under the hood, & the factory exhaust cut out... 2017s didn’t gain anything functional or performance wise, but got 2 new colors...including a metallic orange I thought about adding a super charger, but it already accelerates faster than I can shift it, if the go peddle is to the floor In sport or track mode, the car comes with launch control... engaging holds rev to 4500 - 5000 rpm, with the clutch in, & the go peddle on the floor... and the computer does everything it can to keep the tires from just roasting.... kinda does staggered burnouts for 50 - 70 ft.... it accelerates so quickly, it threw Mrs glasses off her head, and into the back seat, and she was ready for it... Got a good stretch of road by the farm here, that I thought I could try a top speed run... just got it into 6th gear at 155 mph... and had to shut it down shortly after that... They are awesome cars, and hard to find... Chevrolet did not do its job on replacement parts, so you can’t get bumper skins or fenders or doors... values are holding to almost new prices on those holding the miles down... so I mostly just take it to shows... unless I feel the need to do 60 mph roundabouts

I have launch control in my 2017 2SS Camaro. You can activate it in either Sport or Track mode. It does work as advertised. But a friend and I found it can hurt ET's on the strip. We took his 2016 Cadillac CTS-V coupe to Maryland International Raceway a while back. The car has been worked over a little (smaller pulley on the supercharger, E85 tune, and a few other tweaks). It made 630 hp to the tires on the dyno. The first run went 10.98 @ 127 mph with a poor burnout (no launch control). The second pass he got a good burnout and it slowed to 11.20 (w/launch control). I suspect the launch control cut wheel speed enough in the first two gears to hurt acceleration. His third pass got a great burnout, shaving a 1/10" from his 60 foot (no launch control). That slip came back 10.80 at 129 mph. Is your '16 the LT3 or were they using the LT1? I know Camaros switched to the LT1 that year. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

It's supposed to be an LS-3... 415 hp as factory... I have a Roto-fab cold air intake on it, that supposed to add 10 more hp... then hydro-dipped all that black plastic under the hood... only changes made to the car... it has a big back seat ( think Impala ) though the car is sized between the Malibu & Impala, has a pass through to the trunk... self parks ( as a drivers car, I've never even turned on that feature ) heated and cooled front seats... mine is the "enthusiast" package... no sun roof, & a full sized spare... which puts it at a perfect 50 / 50 weight balance... it surprised my buddy with a convertible BMW one day we were out cruising, & got to an abandoned stretch of road with several round-abouts... the SS will really scoot through those like it's on rails... BTW... lovin the Camaro... been trying to talk MRS into trading her 79 for a new one... her's a factory 350 - 4 speed... I think the 350 in 1979 had a whopping 185 hp... it's only got 70,000 miles on the car ( it's also white )... they just made American cars so crappy in 1979... I think she would be better off with a new one

LEFTY... it's "unique" the model is actually called an SS Sedan... Chevy imported them only in numbers enough to use the chassis for NASCAR... SS has always been a package, but on this one SS Sedan is the model... they were build at a Holden / Chevy Plant in Australia, before they closed it down in 2017... while it looks like a Malibu or Impala, it doesn't share any body parts with either... it's structurally very strong ( apparently the roads are rough in Australia ) for example on most sporty cars, extreme handling can be improved by adding a strut tower brace... not needed on this chassis these weren't the 1st that GM imported... they also did it with Pontiac with the G-8's & GTO's starting in 2008 & 2009 before Pontiac was shut down... a poor quality picture... but these cars are cousins, both made in Australia

I thought about adding a super charger, but it already accelerates faster than I can shift it, if the go peddle is to the floor The horsepower bug definitely bites when owning cars like these. I've considered putting a cam and long-tube headers on my SS. Takes HP from 455 to just over 500. But I've held back. Not sure I want all that noise, all the time. Plus you get a lot of popping when you go that route. Fast forward to 2:30 for that illustrated: Like you, I'll probably leave it as is. The car already has a Borla back-half kit and sounds good. And while a cam & headers may make it a tad faster, it won't touch the low 8-second Chevy II I have in the garage. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Thank God for the rev limiter... mines bounced off that a couple times... I think if I did anything more... I might do long tube headers & a more efficient X pipe seems crazy to use launch control under factory warranty Love the VID BOXHEAD... see what you started
