If you were going to send a nice revolver off to get an ovate barrel installed, would you get a 4 5/8" or a 5 1/2"? Blued gun, 44 Special old model Ruger conversion is the gun in question.

I'm in for the short one! I still like 4-3/4 on down the best. Just personal preference. Accuracy for me is merely a figment of my imagination from my misspent youth. Tim

Personal preference of course but unique barrel profiles (ovate, octagon and banded) all benefit from a little extra length - so on a full size frame 5.5".

Robb - here is an ovate Hamilton did for me - 5.5"
One other thing to ponder are flutes and black powder chamfering. This one started out with an unfluted cylinder. To my eye it just didn't look right. The ovate barrel is not as flashy as an octagon, and the flutes/BPC add a lot to the revolvers appearance IMO.

I'd go with a 5.5" barrel.

My ovate barrel is 5.5 inch. Prefer no flutes on any firearm.

Sounds like most of you guys have the same thoughts I do with the 5 1/2". Existing gun with flutes already so fluted, BP chamfer and 5 1/2" ovate then off to Rob Rowen.

Be curious to see how it turns out...thinking about sending one out to Bowen later in the year for an ovate barrel...that'll give me three in process with different barrels (1 express with barrel band, 1 octagonal, 1 ovate)...
What else are you considering having done while it's out?

I could probably be talked into either length. Here's my old ovate gun with a 4 5/8 inch ovate. This has a sculpted front sight which might change things a bit.

I had an OM .44 Clements gun with a 5 1/2" ovate barrel that was awful nice. Pics are hostage in photo*ucket. That integral front sight on the current offerings is what has been holding me back. Probably because mine have the same front sight as the one Mike just posted....sooo sweet. I like my 4 5/8" ones. Oh, what the heck.....here they are:

That is pretty, I like a fluted cylinder too!
