I'd stick with my Colt's SAA 4 5/8" .44 Special. It has the perfect balance and feel to make it reflexively responsive to me. The action is silky smooth, and it is utterly reliable. The .44 Special is a caliber that I can trust for any situation that I would foresee running into. In either a high ride belt holster, or an inside the waistband rig for deeper concealment, it is light enough on the belt to travel quite comfortably for me. I use a small belt slide to keep few spare cartridges on hand. I'm another who thinks the Colt SAA is an easy packing six-gun.

Groo here I usually carry a flat single stack auto when I go to town.[city wolves tend to be in packs] A DA in the open spaces . [bigger wolfs ,2 or 4 legged just not as many] But if power is in the offing I go with A single action.{all types plus BHBS aka Big Hairy Bighty Scratchy] Most all mine are or will be 3 3/4 inch SS [maybe one blue] But my bestest is a New Vaquero Andy Horvath made me in 41 mag.

I couldn't find the pic of my 45 Colt Montado in the Mernickle holster when I posted earlier. Also failed to mention the Model 92 clone lever action in 45 Colt I have to go along with this SA. Ammo is either the Speer 250 grain Gold Dot/Deep Curl bullet at 1,000 fps... or a similar cast hp bullet that seems to upset gallon jugs of water more than the modern Speer bullet.

I guess I would carry my short barreled single seven 327 in some sort of cross draw holster. My other choice might be the flattop 4 5/8" 44 special. I would have to buy a Henry in 327 since they are the only ones that make one. I would rather have a good jap made Winchester 1892 with a 20" barrel if they made it.

Groo here I have "some" single actions that would work.. Any Ruger 3 3/4 in in 357 or bigger would be fine, usually with a birds head grip. An Andy Horvath "Little Gun" or similar if you like adj sights. The shorter the barrel , the bigger the hole should be as larger bores tend to loose fewer FPS per inch of reduction. The "BEST" might be a short barrel in 45ACP [they will shoot ALL 45acp , +p, and 45 super loads].. This would allow the use of a 1911 mag as a speed loader [ just thumb them in to the big holes in the cylinder] and if cut correctly.. the tab on the mag [ mill spec types ] could be used to remove a stuck case if a finger nail was not enough. As the OP stated a rifle in the same cartridge , I would pick a 327/32 mag, a 357, 41,or 44...[check Henry] The 45 colt's rim is a might small for my taste [ I have had troubles loading and in a lever gun] The ones above have larger stronger rims.

I think a Andy Horvath Lil Gun in 41 Special with a Henry 41 lever would be a great combo!

Do you have specs/pics of those thumbnail cutouts? I guess whatever size I needed would work huh?!

I have several that have the thumbnail cuts... just want to keep them shallow enough ideally, that the inserted case doesn't expose the thin case wall to the cuts ( only as deep as the thick base of the case that holds the primer ) Better picture of those cuts, before the gun was engraved... as you can see here... plenty of room to get a nail in there & pop out the case This custom Colt Walker cartridge conversion has the cuts as well... this picture during the build... the cases are shortened slightly 460 S&W cases ( cartridge I call "45 Walker" ) chambers are short enough to keep a 460 S&W from being inserted into the chamber nail nicks are more visible in this picture later in the build, after the barrel was shortened some more... This pair of 51 Navy Cartridge conversions ( guns stamped 38 Long Colt ) shoot cowboy loads of 38 Special... stamping to keep any future owners from inserting +P or +P+ 38 Special, guns were strengthened to handle "normal" 38 Special loads & those pop out easily with a thumb nail... all the guns easily release the spent cases... as mentioned, I think as long as the nicks are shallower than the web of the chambered cases, you'll be fine...

"TINKER" has actually done the machining on his revolvers... he could probably relay the diameter & depth & angle of the cut???

I see no reason a larger diameter cutter couldn’t be used cut to fit the Base of a 45 acp magazine

Full-size, butter-smooth, 4 3/4" Beretta Stampede (so I can load 6), in .45 Colt, carried in a high-ride, Leather holster.
Snubby barrels and bird-head grips are affectation I don't need or want, as both are detrimental to effective gun handling. That long heel profile on a single-action grip is the for a reason. Balance is also important. It's much easier to point with a stick than with a rock, or with a finger than with a fist...
