I was looking through my inventory and I don’t have a 45 ACP in a single action revolver. If you were going buy or build one, what would you do?

I like revolver cartridges in revolvers and auto cartridges in autos. I guess I'm just funny that way.

Wait about 6 more months..... The one I've got coming is an OM.... If I were going to order yet another...... SS flat top .357 to convert(comes with 2 cylinders so you can get one done in .45 Colt too) Stripped aluminum grip frame 4" barrel bisley spur ( you can get the ss ones if you don't have a stash) Sights of your choosing... Or you could do basically the same thing with a Vaquero if you wanted to..... I've been fondling things a lot and I'm really liking the weight reduction and balance of a mid-frame gun with the alloy grip frame. I know they don't finish up as nice and the weight difference isn't that much but they sure do feel "right". With the big holes in the cylinder and barrel it would pack well....

Ive got two of the Ruger 45 Convertibles. Both Flattops, one stainless and one blue.
With a few upgrades, both are tight, well made guns.
I bought Starline 45 Special brass and sized it in a 45 acp die. Brass rims are the perfect thickness and they work well.
It was a simple, low cost option. As a plus, the ammo can be fired in the 45 Colt cylinder too. Another option the AR prohibits.

I'd go Ruger and not look back. The SA factor makes them cut the chambers better since they don't have moon clips to head space on.

Try finding an older 70's era Ruger convertible in 45 Colt/ 45 ACP... 7.5 inch barrel. Exceptional accuracy out of the ACP cylinder. All Ruger 45 ACP convertible cylinders have minimum dimensions and you have to load specifically for them.... BUT IT'S WORTH IT.

My Stainless Flattop shoots almost every ACP load I've fed it with considerable more consistency than the 45 Colt cylinder I had to tailor a load for. As Encore said above, they are a simple low cost option (If you can keep from wanting to personalize it ).

I like revolver cartridges in revolvers and auto cartridges in autos. I guess I'm just funny that way. All a matter of taste I suppose. Can't speak to single action revolvers but my Smith 1917's have always offered good accuracy, revolver reliability and flexibility, excellent speed loading, and make nicely sized holes in paper. According to Marshall and Sanow, loaded with 230 grain Hydrashocks, they should also be a top grade man stopper if ever called on for self defense. For factory loaded practice ammo there are reasonably cheap options available almost everywhere. Outside of handgun hunting or long range target shooting, I find the 45 ACP to be an excellent revolver cartridge.

The 45 ACP in a revolver isn't too shabby as a hunting round with good bullets. Just keep in mind it is an ACP, not a 45 Colt.

I have a NM 7.5 Blackhawk with an extra 45 acp cylinder. It is a great shooter, lots of 45 acp brass for scrounging at the range. Pic with a sibling below. I picked up a 45 acp cylinder from the Colt forum classifieds and a base pin bushing from eBay and fit that cylinder to a 5.5 SAA, that is also quite a treat.

My 5.5” Blued Lipsey flat top .45 convertible has been a .45 acp since the day I got it, it’s never had the .45 colt cyl in it. Once I sorted out a few details with my old cases, I’ve had no trouble. In fact, it’s a real pleasure to shoot, pretty mild and pretty accurate.

So happens, while shooting the .357 Maximum yesterday, along with a .44 Mag Bisley Hunter, the Ruger 03 on my hip got to feeling left out. Popped out the .45 Colt cylinder.... in went the .45 ACP cylinder, and the 03 joined in with, poking a few clays and stones with cast 200 SWC over 5.5/231.
The beauty of the .45 ACP in the single action comes shooting the exact same ammo you shoot in a self-shucker, and that sweet one-at-a-time ejector rod, which doesn't care whether or not brass has a rim. Now, if you want a .45 single action exclusive for the .45 ACP, glide your paw onto a Ruger small Vaquero with birdhead grip and 3-3/4” barrel. That Birdhead Vaquero is a sweetie. I’d take the little Birdhead Vaquero .45 ACP anyway, over the same handle hanging onto a .45 Colt.
Since its introduction, the Blackhawk Convertible has been a sleeper----versatility best appreciated in the shooting. David Bradshaw
