Just a few days ago one of the local guys got busted big time. Some of you that have visited me have been past his place up Trail Canyon. Anyway, some how the Fish & Game had information that he had several trophy bull elk mounted in his home & got a warrant. It was on the news two days ago & showed 3 big bulls & one big Mule deer, all mounted. One guy told me he had just cut the heads off & buried the elk with his bull dozer to hide the evidence. Don't know if that's true or not. Anyway, the got got fined $12,000, lost his license for life & 90 days in jail. Other than that he got off scott free!

So I figure 3000 for each animal, about what you’d pay for a self guided hunt as a nonresident or a trophy hunt as a resident, his loss of license means nothing as a poacher, he’ll still go kill stuff. Other than 90 days he has no punishment

Here we have a couple distinct groups of folks that think current State and Federal laws don't apply to them in general but especially when it come to hunting big game. They kill what they want when they want where they want and usually don't get caught.
I can't hunt on one of these groups property EVER.
"They" were here before "us" and that makes it OK.
The guy that does my transfers has stopped doing transfers for .204 Rugers as they are now the "tool of choice" for one of these un-named groups to poach elk with. POP right in the noggin and they go down.....
Honestly, if somebody REALLY needs to poach an animal to feed their family once in a while...so be it. But, the taking of trophies like that is inexcusable.
The elk heard in NM was completely wiped out in the early 1900s. Every elk in NM came from ones that have been reintroduced long ago now. People forget the damage they can do.....

What really posses me off is these poachers always seem to kill the prey species. I could care less if someone poached bears or wolves. But these culls make the problem worse because they deplete the ruminate population.

Many years ago when fur prices were good, we had a guy who would cover about a 40 mile radius on a 4 wheeler with a spotlight at night. I lost some trapped animals to him.
He finally got busted for poaching big bucks right before season and only taking head and antlers. If memory serves, his caliber of choice was a .17 rem.

Glad they caught him.
Here,,, the local news media would have labeled him a "hunter" not a poacher. I always cringe when they talk about hunters & poachers as if they are one in the same.

I'm pretty sure this guy, now being a felon can't own a gun, can't be around anyone with a gun, etc. He's toast if they catch him again, he'll go to prison. He has a neighbor about 1 mile from him that did almost the exact same thing only he didn't learn his lesson, he ended up doing about 5 years in the Idaho State Pen! Also, these guys can't hunt any of the surrounding states for life either. Don't know if that covers the entire US but it covers about all of the western states for sure.

Well I suppose there's poaching and there's poaching. A desperate need for food on the table you can at least understand. A friend is alleged to have kept her family eating, one bad layoff year back in the 70's, with a deer taken here or there. Her stated preference being to get in close and put a 22 LR in the spinal column near the skull. Never had reason to doubt her. It was told more matter of fact than brag in a discussion of big game calibers. She was a heck of a shot trained young by her dad who'd been an instructor with the Army Marksmanship Unit. I don't doubt she could put a bullet anywhere she wanted and I've seen her stalk like a ninja to take photographs of wildlife. Trophy poaching though?!? Ugh!

A acquaintance of mine here in Walla Walla had two friends come down for a visit from Alaska. The Alaskans kept suggesting that they go out deer hunting, so my buddy asked a mutual friend if they could hunt on his property.
All was going fine until one of the Alaskans shot a moose! "I thought it was a deer" being his excuse. My buddy was right worried about that, as you might imgine, so he called the game wardens to report that a "mistake" had been made. This was much to the protestations of the Alaskans, who wanted to butcher the moose!
The game warden was pretty understanding, considering the circumstances, right up until he asked for the Alaskan's non-resident hunting license. Turns out neither of those two yahoos had bought a license or permit, even though they had assured my unsuspecting friend that they had done so.
Long story short, expensive rifles were confiscated (a Weatherby MKV and a fancy Sako), BIG fines were levied, hunting and gun rights were lost, and there may have been some jail time involved if I recall correctly.
My friend was trembling in his boots the whole time, expecting to join those sorry a-holes in their misery, but the game warden involved was a pretty observant guy, and he determined right away who the real culprits were.
To this day if you want to get a rise out him, just ask him to "guide" you on a "moose hunt".

Not much for Alaskan's if they couldn't tell a moose from a deer. I think their Alaskan card will be pulled! Plus they are automatically suspect for using push feed rifles! Should double fine them or double jail time them! Course, in Anchorage there is about a quarter million complete idiots!!!

Here's the story in today's paper. I was in this guy's house once about 20 years ago with a friend who was doing a property appraisal. Dick

Anchorage is just an hour from Alaska.... I’m guessing that’s like saying Austin is way left of Texas? Trapr

Love to know the rest of the story. Did someone spill the beans on him? Having mounts in your house doesn't make you a poacher.

Danial 4:30, KJV
The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
Right before God made him eat grass.
