Ok... someone has to ask it... so... what would be the fun of the "perfect" rifle??? one rifle that could do everything... is TOTALLY not my style... I'm really enjoying the litterally dozens of them that each do one thing perfectly... ( make me happy ) that would be like saying the "one" single action that could do everything... Blasphomy Well that's the thing: it's fun to see what folks are thinking and doing and jaw around a bit, but there's no such thing as the perfect rifle without context. Every firearm is a compromise between stopping power, firepower, recoil, portability, accuracy, range, etc. Adjust one and lose out on another. You look at what you're trying to do, adjust to taste, and pick accordingly. The perfect general purpose rifle still probably looks a lot like Colonel Cooper's scout in .350. Wouldn't want to be limited to just that though...

Dug through my Remington barrels in my shop. Have a fluted 22-250 and a slim profile 223 and about 27 243 Winchester barrels. Anybody have a clean standard profile .308 barrel surplus to their needs? Not .308 win, but I do have a 30/06 22" sporter contour barrel from a M700 ADL that you can have if you want it. Easily less than 200 rounds through it. I may have two in my stash.

I appreciate it but I don't have a long action to hang it on. I need a .308 or a .260 or even a 7mm-08 to get going.

Do you have a preference for one caliber over the other in the ones you mentioned above?

Please forgive the new guy, but I expected this thread to have a lot of straight walled cartridges in it. For a grab & go how about a tuned up ala Steve Jones Rossi 92 in 357, 44, or 45.

The more I think about it, the more I think the perfect rifle is this:
mausingfield action manners lightweight stock Proof carbon barrel, 20" 375 Ruger
With cast bullets and slow powder it's a rifle for north american big game, a plinker, an all around rifle. Short barrel makes it handy, every component is light weight. Add a muzzle brake and monster scope and you are shooting 375 cal sierra match kings for long range fun. Install irons or a red dot or 1x scope and load up to full snort and you can shoot elephants though it wouldn't be so much fun with the weight reduction. Cases are cheap despite the boutique round, and even with VLD bullets OAL is less than 338 lapua so it fits those magazine boxes (internal or detachable, take your pick). Most important (for me), controlled round feed.
And if dangerous game is not for you, substitute your favorite cartridge because mausingfield and Manners come in short action or long action too. So you can have your 30-06 or 7mm mag or 308 win or 35 win or 220 swift or 257 Roberts etc.
What's the downside? What single substitution could be made that could possibly make it better?

Only things I don't actually know yet:
-Manners come in a 338 length action size? With a bottom metal option for AICS 338 DBM's? -Is it possible to easily and quickly convert such a rifle (again Manners question) from AICS DBM to hinged floorplate, since DBM is not really needed or wanted unless playing oversized-PRS? -can I use reduced load 375H&H data for cast bullets in 375R, and if so, are there loads that use ultra-cheap powder like military 50BMG/20mm pull down powder that are accurate to 100+ yards with any cast bullet I can buy a mold for?
They're kinda critical questions, but I suppose if I had 6k rolling around in my pocket it would be a question for whichever gunsmith I was contracting, because such a build is way out of my wheelhouse unless Proof makes custom pre-fit barrels. I don't think they do (custom cartridge).

Another option: to use a 20" barrel instead of a carbon barrel. The cost is reduced, the weight is not much increased, handiness is marginally better. The extra power from a long carbon barrel is not needed for most of use, and even for long range it's maybe OK as long as a bullet is selected that can survive the trans-sonic transition.

I'm taking that 416 and 350gr Barnes TSX's out this week after blacktail, so hopefully I'll have a field report. But....
I'm also taking my 336 Cowboy 30-30 and my Ruger 77 tang safety 358Win, so the decision will be made each morning as to what I walk out the door with. I'll also be packing my Clements '72 custom Blackhawk loaded with 345gr Beartooth WLNGC or my stainless Ruger NMFT loaded with Matt's 250gr full wadcutters.
So much for narrowing down my perfect rifle.

The 350 TSX is what I also use in my 416 Ruger. I really like the Ruger 416 & 375 cartridges. I have also grown fond of the 20" barrels of the Alaskan versions. Very handy for off/on ATVs, in/out of off-road vehicles, tight confines of ground blinds, etc. I appreciate them when navigating through thick timber and brush. For the area that I usually hunt, they are my "near perfect" rifles in 416 and 375 Ruger. Of course, they join a few other "near perfect" rifle ideas in the safe. I can get near perfect for me, with a few, for few specific terrain / animals but not all. I suppose the closest to perfect for me in North America is my favorite 338 Winchester. It would work for me, on coyotes and up. If I hunted a wide variety of game and terrain with one rifle, that would be my solution.
