I don't know where to start. I really like Old Model 3 screw Flat Top's I have one that is a 1969 or 1970 production. I have owned it for about 6 years now. Along the way one of the previous owners had it CCH'd and I suspect the Barrel redone. I would like to pick a Ribbed S&W barrel and make it about 4 3/8". Since the frame has had the CCH done, as long as I were to keep the original barrel would I be making a Mistake? Oh I forgot to mention it's a .44 Magnum. I sure do wish I could get some advice as what do.

I don't know where to start. PLEASE EXCUSE THE ALL CAPS. I really like Old Model 3 screw Flat Top's I have one that is a 1969 or 1970 production. I have owned it for about 6 years now. Along the way one of the previous owners had it CCH'd and I suspect the Barrel redone. YOU DO NOT SAY IF THIS IS A 357 OR A 44 MAGNUM FLATTOP. HOW WAS THE BARREL REDONE? DO YOU MEAN REBLUED? I would like to pick a Ribbed S&W barrel and make it about 4 3/8". DAVID CLEMENTS DOES THAT WORK. Since the frame has had the CCH done, as long as I were to keep the original barrel would I be making a Mistake? IF YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT MODIFYING IT FROM ITS ORIGINAL CONDITION THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE. HOWEVER THE ORIGINAL BARREL COULD COME IN HANDY DOWN THE ROAD. Oh I forgot to mention it's a .44 Magnum. YOUR POST IS TITLED “44 SPECIAL” SO ITS UNCLEAR IF YOUR FLATTOP OR JUST THE BARREL IS A 44 MAGNUM. I sure do wish I could get some advice as what do. GETTING ADVICE FROM THIS BUNCH OF ENABLERS IS LIKE SHOWING UP AT A CASINO AND BEING HANDED A WHEELBARROW FULL OF QUARTERS!

I'm trying to understand why anyone would want to put a "Ribbed S&W barrel" on a Ruger Flat-top. And that's setting aside the problem of it not fitting or working.

Personally I think the S&W rib styled barrels look great on blackhawks. I have one now, have had others them in the past and if the builder knows what he is doing there is no issues with them fitting or functioning. Look in the gallery section on about page 3-4 for a posting by Bushog on a new 41. A perfect example of how a ribbed barrel can look on a Ruger flat top. Here is one I had on a non flat top Ruger in stainless. Here is one on a blued old model blackhawk.

No offense Bobcat but I can't see a S&W rib in either of your pictures. If those are S&W barrels then the entire ejector rod housing has been cut/ground off. That's a lot of work and/or expense. You've apparently attached Ruger/Colt style ejectors and housings to the S&W Barrels. More work an expense. If you're happy with the results, more power to you but I still don't get it.
Peace, Dave

Davet, you are right, the underlug is machined off and Ruger erh assembly us fit and installed. Sorry the pictures are not easier to see but the stainless barrel is a 629 that Clearwater rebored to 45 caliber and it was installed by Jack Huntington. The blued barrel is a model 57 barrel that was machined and fit by Andy Horvath. Not everyone’s style but obviously one more than a few of us guys like on a custom revolver.

I guess it doesn't hurt an iPad to drool all over it. If it did, mine would be kaput.......

No offence meant to anyone just seeking info but.Why would a smith build a custom revolver and not have the cylinder latch drop into the cut made for it so it doesn't leave a mark around the cylinder? Seems like that would be part of the custom treatment.
