Even thought the poll isn't supposed to close until 2 pm today,,, I couldn't figure out how to vote. I own one of each gun mentioned. Both have their place. I'd opt for the 45 Bisley, as it's a bit more versatile in available components.

With a small reloading setup, the 480 is a very versatile cartridge. At the top end(110 or 296)I think you would rarely feel under gunned. At the low end (Trailboss) you could shoot a very small animal for dinner and have very little meat loss other than a near half inch hole through and through. Well said!!!!

For general purpose use, I love the .480 but would take the 6½" .454 over either. Better chamber dimensions than the .45 and better/cheaper bullet selection than the .480. I'd treat it like a five-shot .45Colt, capable of everything from mild to wild with greater capability and a better margin of safety than the six-shot .45.

That's the best argument I've read for the Ruger 5-shot 454 Casull. I voted 45 Colt although I just as easily could have voted 480 Ruger. For the handloader there is little practical difference--even less so if you cast your own bullets. Between the two, and having had both, I prefer the 45 Colt. If I need a heavier bullet I'd rather go right to the 500 Linebaugh or JRH.

That is what I came to conclusion on several years ago after playing with 44 mags 45 colts 454s,480s 475s,and 500L...as a handloader there all great. I just like the 45 colt mild to wild then the 500L for heavy lifting...These 2 are easier on the body at middle of the road loads..Great thread

Is this based on what we already own or if we had nothing?

Late to the party I would take the 480 as I don't have a Black Hawk in that caliber yet. I already have 3 .45 Colts so you know what my favorite caliber is. I am not a fan of the Bisley though as I can't get Pachmayr grips or Hogues for that grip frame and it beats HELL out of my knuckle.

Since the early 70's when I bought my first 45 Colt Blackhawk I have not been without a 45 Colt in one or more Blackhawk configurations, had an Anaconda for a while,, I sure have kicked myself 1000 times for get'n rid of that, had a Redhawk, and Super 45/454, great guns, but just found no reason to keep em with the Blackhawks, and Super Blackhawk Bisley hunter. Had 6.5 480 but sold it and will replace it with 454 soon, just because, but if I could have only one big bore, I would never be without the 45 Colt,, it just has a way with me. So my vote went with the 45 Colt, just can't live without that one. 454/45 Colt either or, as the 454 would most likely be used as the 45 Colt 99% of the time,, but I would have the option.

Not being partial to stainless, and even less so inclined toward the Bisley, I'd just put my money back into my pocket until a blued Super Blackhawk or a Colt New Frontier came along.

I didn't really want to vote, as I love my 480's... but most likely the 45 caliber is more versatile with more bullet weights available... I'm glad I live where I wouldn't have to decide on only one gun

45 Colt for me. Very versatile from cowboy to big game. Only if I could only have 1 of these. I do have a .475 Linebaugh /.480 on my list though. Mine will be a 5".

I really enjoyed the view points and opinions of the community, I knew the 45 colt would come out on top but this was still fun. Thank you everyone
