Was looking through the safe today and noticed that for the most part, all of my full house customs are chambered in 3 calibers; 500, 475, and 45 Colt. on the other hand, my most used guns lately are a stainless bisley 22 and a lightly customized bisley 45 ACP by linebaugh. I have a dillon 1050 set up in ACP, and of course have bunches of 22 rf lying around. All very handy. I've been tossing around the idea of a couple full house bowen/ruger guns in 38 special and 45 ACP. Not the most exciting thing in the world, but two calibers that would take care of most of my shooting needs. A big plus is that if I get caught short on reloading time or desire, reasonably priced ammo is readily available. If I reload for them, I'd be covered hunting game up to medium sized deer. Most of my shooting is out to 50 yards on paper and out to 100 yards plinking plus some deer hunting. While I'm not recoil shy, I don't find it as exhilarating as I used to. I guess I'd like to have a couple guns built and really shoot the snot out of them. May even add a Wilson or Baer 9mm 1911 to the mix and be able to do all my ammo shopping at Walmart if I want to, when I'm old and gray. Any thoughts?

Yes. You desperately need a 327.

You can't go wrong with a 38 Special or a 45 ACP. Both will be a joy to shoot and super accurate.

Yes. You desperately need a 327. Doesn't count, not boring enough Believe me, I've spent a lot of time pondering that caliber. Played a bit with the 32 H&R, and while I thoroughly enjoy it, really don't shoot mine enough. Have a nice drift sighted bisley I'll be sending down the road soon to a more worthy home.

I've got a custom in .38 2 in .45 ACP/Colt in the works now.
The base guns are already gone.
I prolly shouldn't say this but a while back I was having a conversation with Mr. Bowen and he mentioned being interested in the .357 mag.
I know he wrote in his book that he didn't care for that cartridge.
He indicated his mind had changed about it.
I was quite surprised but it goes to show you....it's all good...no matter how plain.
AND there's always the old adage that "you can always find ammo".

My first custom was a 45 Colt/ACP and I've had a .475 and .500 made since then. The only custom I have outstanding at the present is another 45 Colt/ACP. Something to be said for that.

Bushog, You building on the mid frame? That’s what i’m Thinking. For the 38 for sure. The only reason i’m Thinking the 38 over the 357 is cheap ammo if I don’t feel like loading some up. If I do load, I can load up some Keith 38/44 loads that will get me close enough to the 357 to do what I want to do. Will have to see if there is enough cylinder length on the mid frame for the Keith bullet in a 38. I’ll have to pay attention to what you come up with.

I've been pondering a custom Ruger SA .38 Special for a while. An accurate .38 single action is a joy to shoot. I had a 3rd Gen Colt SAA in .38 a few years ago. It was fun but better sights would have been an improvement.
I've seen the Single Six conversions, but I've been looking at the OM .30 Carbine Blackhawk as a platform. The cylinder throats may be a bit long but the .30 Carbine Blackhawk rebarreled to 6" with the .30 cylinder line bored to .38 is what I'm contemplating. Has anyone got any experience with such a modification?
Best Regards, ADP3

Yes the full 173gr Keith bullet fits in a mid sized Flat Top in a 38 case hit not in a 357 mag. At least in the 50th anniversary edition I had. I have thought it would make a slick base gun for the 327/32-20 combo gun but it ends up a bit large and heavy. I personally have a hard time getting excited about 38s and 357s but they have so many wonderful guns built around those cartridges that I find myself shooting them as much as any other cartridge over that last few years.

When I get around to building my first custom, there's a distinct possibility that it will be a 38 special (boring) on a Single Six (not boring!) I generally enjoy an afternoon of shooting low pressure rounds (.22s, .38s, .44 Specials and .45 ACP), but this year I plan to shoot a whole boring bucketful of 44 magnums.
Nothing boring about the classic cartridges, and the experience is only enhanced when they're chambered in excellent sixguns...

Not the .38....David's building it on a Single Six. I won't be able to shoot the big bullets like Fowler mentioned but David says you can run some pretty stout +P loads in them. I had one of his SSs with a 5 shot cylinder that was very nice. His new offerings are 6 shot. That's why I sold the one I had..... I have a 135gn Light 368-640 mold from Miha that I'm thinking will work well....

I have a 327 Blackhawk here that would make a dandy 38 Special.

Yes. You desperately need a 327. I remember David Clements converting a Single Seven .327 to a first - class 38 Special, and showing it to me last summer. Nothing too bad wrong with a proper .38.
