I am in the market for another reflex sight. I have an Ultra dot LT and a Fastfire 3 red dot which I like but see the vortex venom is similar in price. Anybody know anything about the vortex venom?

I've got the FF3 and a pair of the Vortex Venom's. I prefer the Venom for a few reasons. 1- I like the shape of the lens (lower profile and wider). 2- I prefer the controls with an up and down for the brightness and there are more brightness levels. 3- I most definitely prefer the cover.
The above being true for me, I do not notice that one is any better than the other in quality. They both retain their zeros even with stout 45 Colt and 44 Magnum loads and the dots are both crisp enough. The Trijicon I have is a step above either of the mentioned red dots, but it does cost quite a bit more.
They have all helped my aging eyes and I will state I find I can really tell how accurate a revolver can be when using one. Matter of fact that I only have one Single Action that doesn't wear one and it is a Bisquero.
What do you plan to use it on?

Do you think the Venom would hold up to a 480 or a 454 on a Blackhawk Bisley. And how do they compare with a 1" or 30mm Ultra Dot ?

Probably use it on a 357 max, but I've been moving the fastfire around from gun to gun.

Funny you ask about the 454. My shooting partner has a FF3 on a Model 83 454 and it hasn't given up yet. No exactly apples and apples I know.
While I do have an Ultra Dot 30mm, I only used it for one session before it was swapped out for a Leupold 4×, so no comparison there but am aware of their reputation for robustness.
Only real comparison I can give about the Venom is I have one on a 45 Colt Bisley and had one on a SBH 4 5/8" and both red dot's have never lost their zeros. The SBH is particularly nasty with 290's and a nice charge of H110. I don't know how that compares to the 454 SBH, but I bet the 454 is even nastier.
I feel the main issue with putting a micro red dot on a Ruger is the mounting system. I refuse to drill on a frame and won't use a mount that clamps the barrel (it's got to at least look decent don't it?). I have modified an existing mount to where it is rock solid but it took time and aluminum welding skills. With a FA 83 (and probably a 97) it's as easy as ordering the mount from them.
A long post to say I don't really know but expect that the Venom would be fine as long as you use a sturdy mount on either the 454 or 480.

Probably use it on a 357 max, but I've been moving the fastfire around from gun to gun. Read my post above about a suitable mount being the only issue I've found with a Ruger and a red dot. The FF3 or Venom should not have any issue living a long life on a 357 Max and I suspect you'll be able to find the accuracy potential of the revolver with a red dot easily.

I'm currently using a Fastfire on a raptor engineering mount on the 357 Max and so far it's holding tight. www.raptor-eng.com/raptor_rev_d_004.htmI have a weigand mini base holding an ultradot lt on my Bisley 480 with no problems, both these mounts only use the sight screw to hold them, but with the light weight of the base and small reflex sight they stay put. Probably use it on a 357 max, but I've been moving the fastfire around from gun to gun. Read my post above about a suitable mount being the only issue I've found with a Ruger and a red dot. That's the mount I used for my FF3 on my 480 SRH. The owner machined off a little of the front underside for me and it fits fine. I have yet to shoot it, though. I think it'll hold up as factory loads won't be fired in this gun; just my handloads which are not full power loads. If others have used them successfully on 454's then my 480 light-to-medium loads should be ok as well.

When I first read the thread title thought we would be discussing next gen fast attack aircraft. Am in tongue in cheek mode.
