I’m gonna guess he’s pushing 200ish.... His head looks small compared to his body, and he’s thick!

I keep watching for a deal on this one 😉 I've had that book for about 20 years. It is indeed a good one. Regarding weights, such estimates are tricky. I'd guess they are in the140-160 lb. class. It's very easy to over-estimate mountain lion and leopard weights, and if you're truly in the back country, who wants to carry out a whole lion to weigh it? Those are reasons that trophies are scored by skull size.

Sorry for the long silence, Saturdays are long days for me, I have 4 grandson's playing basketball on most of them & today was one of those days. Just got home. The reason I'm showing the Lions is because Tradmark stated that his Lion was bigger than he is & that he weighs 270 lbs, he hasn't replied back so I'm assuming he's standing by that figure.
My taxidermist buddy who was a life long friend that I went on many hunts with once told me he had mounted either 3 or maybe it was 5 that had exceeded 200 lbs, none of them by much. The Lion hunter who played football for me & who sent me the first photo of the big Tom in the Quaken Aspen said he has never taken one. The first Lion being held up by the man & woman that was taken 2 days ago weighed 135 lbs. The second Lion the guy is holding up is quite a bit bigger, it went 173 lbs. The third Lion being held up by my friends son & taken last week tipped the scales at 137 lbs. The big Tom in the tree, which would be hard for anyone to judge but was nailed pretty close by Mike Barranti by using the head as a reference hit the scales at a huge 197 lbs!! My life size cat we guesstimated at 125 lbs.
The Lion hunters that stay in business for any length of time are very good hunters with very good dogs & they work at it. The guys that do the "canned" hunts don't last long before they are outed. When they see a cat track all they see are dollar signs & they will do anything to get those dollars. So, I'm talking to those of you who want a real, honest to goodness fair chase Lion hunt, book some one who has been in the business for a while & you can bet they are the real deal. If you get a cat in a hurry, good for you, if you spend 4-5 days & get a cat, good for you, it's called hunting & you don't punch a time card to shoot something. Good luck to anyone who hunts, them, they are amazing animals!
The old photo's are amazing also! That's going back as far as the Blackburn father.

Thanks for the update Dick, I've also been told that like deer, the further north you go the bigger the lion, the further south, like texas the smaller the lion.
I've been on 3 hunts for a total of 15 days and have yet to see a lion. This is Arizona dry ground hunting and you free cast the dogs as you ride along horseback while making 20 mile loops to cut a track. And when you cut one, the lion could be 200 yards or 10 miles ahead of you and the dogs cold trail until they jump the lion. I love this style of hunting because for me its about good dogs, good horses and being out there, in the field, enjoying the countryside on a good horse with my .44 on my hip. I respect the northern way of hunting, but wading through waist deep snow up steep mountains just seems too much like work for me. And I'm in good shape too!!

Dick, i was really more or less using my size as a reference gauge, but also, in a sense to get an idea of the tone of your post. I know what mine weighed on a scale hanging gutted. Def Over 200lbs when the guts were in. Was it 270. Likely no, but ill never know how big the gut pile weighed. U can believe it or not. I dont really care. I am very well aware of lions, weights and how big they tend to be and not be. And they do get that big. (how accurate or calibrated it was i will never know). That would just start off other conjecture about, well who knows, my scales lie. Just because YOU or a taxidermy friend states what he had has nothing to do with my animal and quite frankly that was something i never brought up. U asked about that. In fact, this all was about the OP thanking max for the magazine. Did u even read the article? Why post Pics with no weights or size references of the people holding them. I can post a pic of a friend of mine with what looks to be a tiny tiny bison. On another site i had people Arguing that the 800lb est i gave was obviously way off Well my friends a large guy. If he was 6’ 300lbs then yeah it was off but hes 6’9” and over 5 bills. Not sure where the caustic tone came from. Its subtle but its there. None of us have been that way with u. Its funny though. An old friend of mine. Was part of the founding group of sci back when it started, had what at what time was the sci number one grizzly bear, polar bear. Has cape buff that have 50+ in spread. Has a 73” moose in his den. Yada yada yada. He was excited to see my lion since he has shot quite a few and has em mounted. He congratulated me and said, “wow thats gotta be over 200lbs.” “Thats bigger than than any of mine.” A very very gracious old hunter and the most experienced hunter i know of. It was nice to hear then and itd be nice to see now.
Btw, down the road in that area theres a fully mounted lion with a tag on it reading its weight, 232lbs. Better run down there and call BS on the owner dick.

robster, that would be a fun way to hunt, horses, dogs & dry tracking for Lions. In most of the western country the isn't much difference in cats no matter where they are taken, the reason is the deer & elk are gathered onto winter range & the big cats eat very well. In the summer months it's not as easy because the game is much more scattered. The big cats are in the best condition of their lives in winter time because they can kill on a regular basis & eat their fill each time.
Tradmark, don't try to down play what you said, you didn't say "more or Less" you said the Lion was bigger than you in every way & that you weighed 270 lbs period!! No where in my reply did I once mention Max, I have not read his article so I have no idea about his Lion. So, I suggest we take this to a PM to finish it up. Regards.
Dick

Not a problem. It may very well have been that size and only you would parse between 230,240, 270. Then again u never delineated between my weight with or without shoes.

I have sat on the sideline long enough. First Max, the lion article was one of the best pieces of writing that has been published in quite some time. The fact that your article allowed me to sit around a deer camp in south Texas with a group of guys that were all rifle hunters and come together over handgun hunting can not be understated. They are all looking forward to seeing what you come out with next. In fact several of them said they were going to be buying your book and get into handgun hunting. It was truly a awesome experience for me personally to be a part of your continuing effort to bring handgun hunting forward.
Second, Dick, You are the shining example of what is completely wrong with handgun hunting and this online world of forums. You come into a conversation with nothing to contribute and try to interject yourself as some sort of expert. It’s amazing to me that the OP’s post was a thank you post for Max and you jump in with your babbling and start going off on some sort of tangent about canned hunts and what not. Once again you are completely irrelevant, but that doesn’t stop you. Either give a tip of the hat to Max or stay out of the conversation. The fact that Tradmark shot, what is considered by everybody, as a monster lion, you can’t even congratulate him. Bitter much.
I was on the hunt when Mark was lucky enough to harvest his lion. We partnered with one of the best lion trackers in the Rocky Mountains. So when they get excited about something you better take notice cause it don’t happen often. Out of all the animals that Tradmark has taken the lion is by far his best trophy and he still can’t believe that he was able to harvest such a beast of a lion.
This thread was suppose to give people an opportunity to see and share their stories and trophies about mountain lion hunting and once again you have injected your babbling into it to try and make yourself into some sort of lion expert, which clearly your not. Still haven’t seen a pic of you with a lion yet. But it’s ok to just put out pics of others with lions give absolutely no info on the person holding the lion for perspective and try to feel somehow more superior. It’s guys like you that are holding this sport back from reaching out to the next generation and growing this passion we have. I am still waiting to see a pic from you with your lion.

Bula
What’s sad is that Dick openly admitted to not reading the article and still tried to inject his opinion. That is why he is irrelevant on this.
FYI, Dick I was there when tradmarks lion was on the scale and gutted at 192 lbs.
