Boone USED to be the place to procure ivory. Here's a "mask" from a walrus as they call it. You can understand why procuring pieces large enough for a bisley is difficult. I got lucky/smart for once and bought the rough slabs that I did from Nutmeg prior to the Kenyan signing it away. The whole ivory issue takes on a different tone when you see some info about the world's lust for ivory versus the elephants. The poachers that actually kill the elephants aren't handsome blue eyed well heeled Crown sippers. They are people at a poverty level noone that is a member of this forum can understand, making YEARS worth of income (What some spend on beer in a month) taking one shot. The Orients' appetite is insatiable, we aren't denting it with the stuff that's been here prior to '90 or '86 or whatever. I'd made a thread a while back asking you all to watch "The ivory game" on Netflix. I didn't get a single response post, not that that was the intent. I again invite you all to watch it. Not because I'm a bleeding heart, it's just different information. I'm not claiming true, unbiased, or honest, it's just different. It WILL make you think. www.boonetrading.com/collections/fossil-walrus/products/scrimshawed-walrus-skull-mask-07

You could always go to Namibia or South Africa (Ivory can be imported from these countries) and shoot an Elephant and have some of the tusks made into grips. Your grips will be very expensive with this method but think of the memories! You also will not be able to ever sell the grips

Weathered PVC is the ticket. LOL. If this takes off, want my usual 10% that I never get.

And it gets brittle and cracks with age (I have the lawn sprinkler repairs to prove it). Dang, bula may be on to something...

I would imagine that the ban some states have against mammoth ivory is because they don't want to have to deal with the issue of identifying mammoth ivory from elephant ivory. Or from people selling elephant ivory products and calling it mammoth ivory.

Thanks for the information everyone! I understand the reasoning behind some of the restrictions. I don't agree with most of them, but I understand. Most of the time it falls under the "This is why we can't have nice things" category because someone had to jack it up for everyone else (poaching for profit, etc). Instead of dinosaurs, sheep and humans, we should be cloning elephant and walrus tusks!

That looks like the material the Cary Chapman got samples of and made a set of grips out of. It sure looks like the real thing from the pictures.

New guy (58cal) gets a lot of props for this.... Indeed! Looks like good stuff (and good work to boot!). Might have to try my hand at some 1911 grips with it.

Giraffe bone also works nice for a ivory look with streaks of pink, red and dark brown mixed into a nice white grip. Feels like debarked elk grip
