In the mid 90s I bought a 629-2 Mountain Revolver (the Smith Mountain Gun 44 first edition) and carried and used it for a couple of years until I had the chance to purchase a Smith 24-3 and being a cop living at just above the poverty level the Mountain Rev was sold to finance the 24-3 4'. I sold it to a fellow shooter who a few months later moved to the west coast and I lost touch with him.
A few months ago I got a call from him as I still live in the same place and had the same phone number. He asked me if I would like to purchase the Mountain Rev back as he was pursuing other interests. Bought the gun from him and it was shipped to my local FFL.
Got it home and inspected it and found it had a light single action let off about 3# but no pushoff. The double action was a mess, gritty, jerky and not conducive to DA accuracy. After shooting a box of 44 Specials through the gun SA it shot nice tight groups just as I remembered. Second outing the cylinder stopped carrying up each time the hammer was cocked. Bummer this gun is destined to go to my grandson for a fly fishing companion.
Took it to a local "smith" who made the action worse where the DA wouldn't cycle at rapid speed, "aahhhh" .
In exasperation to Mr. Garza and Mr. Ambler on this forum and they gave good direction and advice.
Today the gun left my FFL for Chestnut Mountain Sports for a rebuild on the action. Now the waiting begins. Thanks to Fermin and Scotty! Stand up guys!

Don't know about wait time, but I will keep the board posted as the project goes forward. Gun will go to my grandson (age 21) as he likes to fly fish high mountain lakes and streams and all he carries is a fly rod. Thinking about a Diamond D Guide rig and schooling the grandson on my old 24 until he is proficient with the Special. Going to be gifting him this setup.

Speaking as a grandson, that'll become his most cherished posession.

Speaking as a grandson, that'll become his most cherished posession. I agree completely. My grandfather's trapdoor is my single most cherished possession. Every time I slip a cartridge into the breech and flip the door shut I think of the greatest man I've ever known. No doubt your grandson will feel the same way, a truly wonderful gift. Eric

Actually Tom, Scott and I were pleased you took the time to visit with us! That was a very enjoyable conference call and worth every second and it's clear your grandson is a lucky young man. Please call on us any time. I might add I never had a Grandpa in my life. Not even for a single second.

Awesome...way to pass it down. I've got to interject in regards to your leather choice. The rig you mentioned is a very functional one but for your GRANDSON he deserves the HEIRLOOM quality that only a man like Doc Barranti can deliver on. It will also be personalized to be "his" from you... don't settle for mass produced second best. Go with the best and keep perpetuating the sixgun culture. This way when the fish skunk him, he can still look great walking out in a Barranti rig!

Whenever (how rare that can be) it does get cold enough here in S. Texas that I do have to wear a jacket even in my truck I pull out my Barranti Chest Rig. That way my sixgun butt is right where I can get to it. And I'm a sharp heeled feller too!

Thanks guys for the interest and replies. 2Dogs I understand about grandpas, both of mine were dead by the time I was born. One of the reasons I'm passing this gun on to this grandson and I have another grandson who is 6'7" 245 and I'm thinking of buying him an engraved hickory switch!
My other grandson is named Alec and he's a "bigun". He will probably get my 5" Pre 29 that belonged to his great grandfather. Grandkids are expensive.
