CraigC, you seem to have a bit of a hair trigger & I could "enlighten" you on quite a few things but it wouldn't do any good because you always seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder. I'm sure you've never hunted a bear or you would know what I'm talking about with either gun. I know that several months ago you PM'ed me several times & was very polite since I was giving you a lot of information ahead of your up coming vacation. Now when it comes to giving some one else some advice, if it goes against YOUR youthful inexperience you seem to get a bit on edge. Show me some of your bear kills outside of a 500 acre pasture & maybe I can agree with some of the gruffness you seem to display with certain people here on the forum. Cheers! Dick Wow, that came out of left field. Very interesting. I might suggest you re-read the thread and see who is being "gruff" to who. All I said is that I can disengage the safety of a 1911 more quietly than cocking the hammer of a revolver and now I not only do not know how to manipulate a revolver but apparently I have a chip on my shoulder, am young and dumb and only hunt pastures. I made no comments about bear hunting whatsoever because it has never interested me but I'm trying to figure out how this turned into a "measuring" contest. Seems to be some veiled hostility here and that I'm not the one who has been "triggered". Oh now Dick, I'm no expert, but I would bet no pasture cow chip could possibly smell as bad as a funky ole bear chip.

I see this discussion is heading in a bad direction. Take it offline gentlemen, if you feel the need to stink up this pasture.

hunted bears in alaska on prince of wales island. Wildest public land there is. We just motored the boat in and got out and shot the bears. One guy in my hunting party set up hunting sticks and the bear was walking towards us when he shot it. Take home message is that nothing magic happens on public land.
That said, i look forward to seeing what the OP decides to use and hopefully see a nice handgunned bear on here soon!

All arguments aside, I've hunted with handguns in Upstate NY for about 20 some years, before moving to TX. I have always tried to challenge myself meaning hunting at greater distances, scope vs. open sights, going to smaller calibers, etc. In the Adirondack Mts. you could run into a 200 lb bear or a 700 lb bear! That was the hard part of nevering knowing what to expect so I always made sure I had the right bullet to handle any scenario. Bears are tough. Guys have fired 6 44 240gr JHP's and found all just under the hide not a one reaching the vitals. A standard Keith load in the same gun penetrates both shoulders one shot. With all that said at 25 yards or less a 45acp would work, I would use a good WFN. Yeah a 400 cor bon, 10mm, or 460R would all be better but that's not the OP's question. For jacketed, I would use a JSP of good construction like the speer 300gr jsp Ross F & Brian P., have recommened from their writings bc it acts most like a hardcast in jacketed form. I am not crazy about heart/lung on bear or boar I want to disable and drop the animal first shot and be humane as possible. That was always my goal as a handgun hunter, use the right bullet for what ever you shoot and put it in the right place. Animals aren't stationary targets as you just pull they could start turning or wipe around to look towards a noise somewhere, that's where the above loads help as well above a JHP, not that some won't work, just not my first choice, IMO!

I always only used cast on bears & never had a problem even on heart/lung shots. None went more than a few feet. But for the tree stand hunter who is usually quite a bit closer & safer I would say a heavy jacketed HP would probably be OK because he could pick his shot & place it very accurately. I've never shot one from a tree stand so only speculating but as I mentioned before if I used the HP I would back it up with the cast bullets & keep shooting. Many times when a bear is hit it will spin around & bite at the entry giving the shooter time for a follow up shot.
Also remember that if you are using iron sights that black sights on a black bear in dark shooting conditions can be a problem, just another thing to think about. Also, much of central Idaho is a 2 bear area even for the non-resident & the second tag is very reasonable. Just be prepared for wood ticks & if you hunt late into the spring watch for rattlesnakes. We've hunted for 2 weeks & never seen a single one & the next day they are everywhere.

My choice of those you listed would, as others have said, be the 255's!!! That is essentially a 45 Colt in a self cocker. The Underwood load in particular or 255g loads in general?

I'm still waiting to hear the secret of cocking a revolver whereby the clicking of the bolt dropping and then rising again is magically silenced.

No sharing of the magic? Are we content with just making unprovoked personal attacks and passive-aggressive insults?
Ok.

Craig, I looked back & it was Sept. 23 when the moderator, Whitworth said to take this off line & here you are again still doing what you do best, trying to cause problems. Several people have complained about your negative comments to their posts when it would be better to just say nothing. I thought maybe Whitworth would step in again but maybe.....Anyway, I chose to just ignore your PM because you definitely have a problem, not sure what it is but it's there for sure. The good thing is, I haven't lost my sense of humor yet so if & when you ever go bear hunting and you choose to flick that safety off at the last second, don't say you weren't warned. Will a revolver do it with absolutely no noise, no, but much quieter than a 1911, so argue the point but since you've never hunted them remember I was trying to help the other guy, you're beyond help.

One might do well to keep in mind how many of us here cherish Dick and thereby be guarded with any response that might not be taken so well. Or forgotten so easily. I can promise I would not stand by idle if any such took place in my presence. So please be nice.

I just don’t understand why CraigC felt the need to revisit this. Is it because personal messages to Dick went unanswered so he felt the need to call him out publicly to get a response? If so that behavior suggests some serious sociopathic indicators. I just don’t get it.

I just saw this, and as I said before, take it offline. I hate it when these things devolve into displays of poor, juvenile behavior. I asked you all once before to take it offline. On that note, this thread is locked. My apologies to the OP. Kudos to those who didn’t pile on.
