I'm prepping for an upcoming Apple Seed shoot ( my 2nd )... I pulled out my 10-22,that I built for this purpose, sighted it it with the Winchester 333 packs I have currently... since it's my 2nd time, I know I'll need to shoot standing, sitting, and prone... my mother's side of the family has tremors... I'm young enough, that it's not really noticeable, I only really have problems right now shooting standing, with no "field rest"... I'm thinking my sitting and prone groups are tight enough to qualify... but I have 3 shots outside of a 4 inch circle ( out of 10 ) standing, at 25 meters... yes I'm using the sling, and trying to time my breathing... any other suggestions that I can work on in the next couple of weeks???

You could try moving your sights in a figure 8 pattern over the target such that you control -well enough-the guns movement. With an established/repeated pattern you could then time when to press the trigger such that the sights will be centered on the target as you fire your rifle.

I'd recommend chunking the sling. Mount the gun with your support arm pulled all the way in so that your upper arm rests against yout side. Don't hold the rifle to hard. Let it gently rest in your hands. What sights are you using? We old guys, 45-70 years old, getting ready for the NRA Rifle Instructor pre quals found that a good set of peep sights helped us see the sights and shoot better. Got a good trigger? There are lots of good simple aftermarket sight upgrades out there for the 10-22

I have the recommend Tech Sights... they are a windage adjustable rear peep sight, an an elevation adjustable front post sight, with protective wings... I also have the recommended adjustable web sling... trigger is factory, but the gun has been shot enough that it's not horrible... not a target trigger by any means... but not horrible... my welder / machinist buddy ( different guy than my retired tool and die buddy ) has made up a jig, and did his 1st 10-22 a couple weeks ago, with good results... I probably won't have time to mess with it before this year's shoot... but may address that later... I'll post a picture or two of the rifle Tuesday, when I get back to work.... shoot is in a couple weeks so I'm hoping to work on my free standing shooting the next couple weekends

Are you allowed to use a loop sling?

I'm not sure... I think you are allowed... but pictured is the sling that is the "recommended"

Instead of attaching the sling to the buttstock make a loop and tighten it to your arm above your bicep. Look for some youtube videos on loop sling. You won't be able to pull it real tight with your type of stock but it might help you alittle.

I do this occassionaly do this due to a pinched nerve... or so they say. Thank the Lord for bull barrels đ While most prefer light and whispy barrel... I much prefer a longish or heavy barrel as it guarantees me accuracy đ

I just drink coffee until my eyeballs start bouncing around and that counterbalances the shakes. And with the amount of coffee I drink anyway, that's no small feat!

I am sure appleseed is different, but I shoot standing offhand for all rifles using the muzzleloader method. With my support hand very close to the trigger guard, turned backwards, and my elbow on my hip (meat on meat, never bone on bone) as a stable platform.
All rifles that is, except the safari rifle. That guy would get away from me in a hurry!

With an established/repeated pattern you could then time when to press the trigger such that the sights will be centered on the target as you fire your rifle. Off hand shooting is all about trigger timing . The horizontal figure 8 is what I work to establish . Then just time the shot going off. I guess I spent too many years hunting from a boat. And hunting on the coast . If I couldn't take the shot offhand , I lost the opportunity.

Let us presume the trigger is not heavy and rough. If it is, fix it. For now, forget that nice sling borrowed from the M1 Garand. I would try this:* Deep breath, exhale to comfort. * Pull rifle into shoulder pocket with firm pressure. * Offhand supports forend, elbow @ 6 oâclock and braced against chest. * Squeeze trigger with smooth accumulation of pressure. * Squeeze shot within 5 to 7 seconds. The gunhand pulls butt into shoulder, a rearward pressure. The offhand provides a rest for the forend----without rearward or grasping pressure. Whether shooting offhand or from a rest, trigger squeeze is the same. Donât take a shortcut on the trigger just because the sight picture looks perfect----to do so pulls the shot off target. Let us know if this doesnât help; weâll try again. David Bradshaw

That Appleseed shoot will put a body to the test for sure. Got a buddy that shots them down here in Florida.

Well, I'll be the contrarian. I believe in using a sling, as I believe any old Marine does. Yours is attached backwards, though.
