I have the 4" Mountain Gun & it's a packing/shooting favorite. Accurate with many different loads. Just drop it in one of Mike Barranti's masterpieces & go play all day.

Groo here I havem-22, m-25,m-325,and m-625 4in or shorter and find them more accurate than me. Also, the 45acp is loaded to similar levels that most shooters down load to.[41,44,45lc] And are cheaper to buy...

If I might add a reply...
I recently purchased a new classic model 25 in 6.5". I rarely target shoot, 90% plinking cans and such, but this is one of the few guns I hit everything I'm aiming at. I shoot matts 260 Keith (.452) over 8.5 Unique. All my smiths have a lock. I've never touched em and never had a problem. The fit and finish on mine is excellent. The cylinder release latch did need some breaking in. My smiths all wear Ahrends grips and have Wilson combat springs in them. This one has Ahrends Tactical. It's not my favourite Smith but it's an excellent vehicle for the .45 Colt. I still love my new vaquero 7.5" but I begrudgingly recognise that this model 25 is a better firearm in every way. I don't think you could go wrong with a new one.

Thank you for all the replies, gentlemen.
I have some thinking to do.

The 25 isn't even on the CA roster. Oops. So I went to the 29-10 and... So the 4" isn't on the CA roster but the 6.5" is. Hmmm? Um, okay... :sigh: I looked before but missed the non-4" option before posting this but did not before I made a phone call. Not the end of the world but that 2.5" comes at a premium I'm not sure perceived value covers currently. Then when you look further into the list to see the model 69 4" which makes ZERO sense. So thinking of going for that fine weapon instead. Although I have the budget for the 6.5", this one should give me a bit of meat on the bone for new grips if I deem fit, because I can never leave well enough alone. If you want a good laugh and a case study in non-common-sense-non-sense, pull-up a chair with a beer, a dram of your finest Kentucky bourbon from distillery possibly nearby, or glass of red from Kalifornia for added benefit, and casually browse the ca.gov 2017 list and pray your state stays as gun friendly as it currently is, and enjoy the the spoils of your state as it currently stands.

Yep, you just gotta love the state we live in. 61 pages of recently removed firearms and 2 pages of recently added ones. Bravo California!

If you can find a 25-5 cheap enough , you can send it in and have a new proper sized cyl fit to it . My 4" 25-5 is at S&W right now waiting to get a new cyl. Well, after getting my model 25-5 back from S&W last week, I would have to say that getting it re-cylindered is NOT a good idea. They did fit a new cylinder to the gun, about .454 in the tight spots ,and eggshaped to about .456, they also recrowned the barrel , looks like they used a .5" drill bit and just plunge cut the end . It is the worst work I have ever seen, they ruined the gun. It is now enroute to a real gunsmith to get straitened out. What a shame no more craftsman left at S&W apparently . An 8th grade shop class could have done a better job .

I used to visit Smith & Wesson with anywhere from one to a dozen sixguns for tune-up, highly skilled work performed each time. This includes having the barrel set back to clean barrel face erosion. The great S&W guru Al Plaas worked on my guns and I had the privilege of standing by his shoulder as he performed. Today, I would call Jack Huntington as a known skilled and certified mechanic on the Smith & Wesson. Various folk on Singleactions may recommend a smith for Smiths. Fortunately for thousands of M-29 shooters, the S&W .44 Mag never suffered the ambivalent chambering specifications inflicted on the .45 Colt. It would seem a .41 Mag or .44 Mag cylinder could be rechambered to correctly contain the .45 Colt. No idea on availability of “surplus" cylinders. David Bradshaw

That is exactly what was done to the 25-5 I recently rehomed. Andy Horvath rechambered a 57 cylinder to correct spec 45 Colt deminsions to bring stuff back to hoyle.

That is what I ended up doing. The gun and new .44 mag cyl are on the way to a competent smith for rechambering and a reshape and recrown of the bbl and pinned sight conversion .

I have always found S&W gunsmiths to be excellent. I am really sorry to hear otherwise. I have used them for my Smiths for years. No shipping charges, no charges at all.
Things keep changing. No way to stop it.
I got lucky with my 25-5. It has the large cylinders at .455" . However, I get good accuracy 2" at 25 using factory, but my handloads using .454 bullets get 1" groups at 25.
I had considered getting a new cylinder while S&W had them available, but your post froze that idea in its tracks. With 1" accuracy, I can live with handloading specifically for the 25-5.
I'm a real happy camper.

Nope, it looked bad enough that there is no way in hell that my gun is going back there.

The 25-9 is not only pre-lock, it's also pre-MIM.
