Can't afford an SAA with the current demand and have been smitten with the 25 for a long time but have been apprehensive on the QC of modern S&W and about the lock. Figure the price is still right and have been in the market for another S&W, although never owned a modern interpretation...
Figure if the consensus here is good/excellent then I'll procure one. So what is the overall perception of a BNIB 25 45LC 6.5", and is the lock a non-issue?

I have two Smiths with the lock and neither have given me any issues, but have heard of a couple that have, but again, hearsay. I wrangled with this a bit also, back and forth between a 25 and a new 29, in the end I found a used 29-3 and snagged it. I handled one of the new ones at the LGS recently and it was very hard to close the cylinder on it, not sure why, but I found it off-putting. If you can afford a few more dollars I would find a 25-5 and go with that, ideally one that is not pinned and has the triple alpha prefix as those have the best size throats for lead bullets I have read. Expect to pay around a grand.

Or better yet, try and find a 25-9. It's my favorite handgun of all that I've owned to date... John Linebaugh went over it while visiting with him a couple of years back and he gave his stamp of approval that everything checked out. It's pre-lock with the endurance upgrades and the classic lines of Mr. Keith's Model 29's. It's my PPP. Stump

I reclutantly sold my 25-5 because I simply couldn't get the accuracy that I felt it should deliver, with the .456 and .457" throats.

Perhaps you had one of the earlier -5's with pinned barrel and N prefix? According to Linebaugh, those throat issues were fixed in the later -5's.

I bought one of the new Classic 25s and very pleased with it. A .452" pin gauge has a bit of slack, but a .453" won't fit. Some somewhere in that range.
Don't care for the lock, but not a deal breaker. Accuracy is good at about 1.5" @ 25 yards with hard cast.

If you can find a 25-5 cheap enough , you can send it in and have a new proper sized cyl fit to it . My 4" 25-5 is at S&W right now waiting to get a new cyl.

I found some .454 lead bullets from Hornady and used a RCBS expander with the RCBS custom .454 stem to create a nest for the bullet in the brass case. The nest kept the case from swaging the bullet down to .450 during seating.
Works really well for over sized cylinder throats.

Hey Kooz,
I have been told many times that S&W doesn't have any more cylinders to do that work. Are they making a new one for you? Or is it from old stock? Did you have any problems getting them to accept it? Is it covered under warranty?
Great news!

They are just going to fit a new cyl from the current model 25 classic to my gun . They said that the bluieng would be slightly different than the older finish on my gun , but not that noticeable . I am going to have them reblue it in high polish so it all matches . Not sure what the cost is yet as they have not given me the estimate yet . They told me that for the cyl only it would be somewhere around $250 parts and labor when I initially called .

I thought the 25-7 was the last of the pre lock Model 25s.
