Updated 30 Carbine/327 Federal discussion

But in the meantime, we have learned a few things. I was talking to a fellow forum member today and explained to him I had so many different projects going that I had to nibble on one for as long as I could and then I would nibble on another, then another, always busy, but each took awhile to complete.

So, Along the lines of the above thread:

1. I managed to be beat Dick Thompson out of this Buckeye converted to Bisely with the 32 Mag only cylinder rechambered to 327 Federal.
2. I FINALLY found a 30 Carbine cylinder that needed a home. It's not in hand yet, and I need it to do some measuring!
3. I was able to secure a full size Ruger frame only that suffered a unfortunate detonation. I think I can fix it....
4. We have tried and discovered the 32 Sixgun Sledgehammer even sized to .309 and loaded to cyl length WILL NOT chamber in a 30 Carbine.
5. The possibility remains that the Miha 115 grain GCHP sized to .309 might fit and chamber in the 30 Carbine, but how fast will it go?
6. The 30 Streaker, 300 GNR, 321 GNR, 327 Martin Meteor, and other Wildcats based on the 300BO and 357 Max case need to be further explored.

What we do know is, in a modern sixgun with good strong brass, the 32-20 will push the 135 grain Miha GCHP 1500 fps Plus from a 7 1/2" sixgun. The question is, what is the next level? What do we have to do to get it to fit in a standard sixgun?

Last, I have on the drawing board a very sick idea for a completely non traditional but field practical sixgun that might be a varmint slayer like no other....

So lets get the discussion going again. Somebody get thier Ruger 30 Carbine out and find out if the Miha 115 will work and how fast will it go. Dick, thanks for your help, but don't stop there, lets get some mud on those croc's. Where's that dang Tyrone? Put the possum down and let's get one of the 30 Carbines out and actually shoot the thing. Scotty (Waterboy), I know you can shed some light here....

I am surprised that the 135 hp won't fit the .30 carbine cylinder. I've never run it in a .30, having sold my 30 carbine off before I acquired the Miha sledgehammer mold, but I would have assumed that the oal of all the Blackhawk cylinders would be the same. Interesting bit of info. May have to see if I can scrounge up a .30 carbine Blackhawk....... 8-

Fermin, I have a Reeder Ultimate Bisley in 300 GNR with an 8" barrel. It also has an auxiliary cylinder in 32-20.

That Ultimate Bisley should have a custom, longer cylinder, than a stock 30 Carbine BH will have.

Well, lets not get too hasty, one could inside neck turn the case. The reason the Sledgehammer wont fit is the case walls are too thick at the base of the bullet. Still, unless someone tries it, it's hard to say how much inside neck turning would improve performance with the heavier bullet.

What we might really need here, is for our very own bullet designer man to come up with a purpose specific bullet. I have sent him a PM....

For the purposes of advancing my considerable knowledge and research you could send it to me to explore its capabilities and performance envelope. You might also ever after live happy in the knowledge that your former sixgun will live a full and rich life in my capable hands. Remember, this will create a void in your safe. You will have to focus on a new custom. Out with old. In with the new....

Unlike Axe, I assume your cylinders are both factory length and not custom? If so, you could always just load a 300 GNR dummy round with a 135 Slegehammer and see if dang thing will fit and enlighten us all and just save the postage...

Gun also has Gary's custom Set-Back trigger.

We could easily get Gary to open a Single Seven window to 30 Carbine length and build a new cylinder for it.

Using the same barrel would give us the .311" bore. I'd think 1.60-1.65" cartridge OAL would be possible.

Gary has already done his Trail Gun on the Single Six in the 30 Carbine. The issue is, the Carbine case walls are quite thick. Thus, you can only seat a bullet so deep before you create a bulge in the case and a round that won't chamber. I measured some factory 30 Carbine jacketed bullets the other day. They werent even .308"! They were .3075" so length is only part of the issue.

As I said, we might have to get Bob to design us something special. It is after all what he does....

But, I wasn't clear...My bad...

What I was saying is I could send Gary one of my Single Sevens in 327 Fed. Get him to lengthen the cylinder window and build a new 327 Fed cylinder that would accept the 327 Fed loaded to 30 Carbine length.

Will be watching this thread with great interest..... I had some ideas of itilizing some 357 max brass and a set of dies for another round for a .30 cal bottleneck back when I had my 30 carbine but decided I needed a new house so..... have everything but the revolver now....

In the Single Seven cylinder window, anything with a COAL of 1.50 PLUS would be a improvement, however, how much you would gain is the question. You might also consider the 32-20 for some additional case capacity and even then, I believe you will be limited to 120-125 grain bullets unless you deep seat them and you are right back where you started....

When I get that 30 Carbine cylinder I am going to sit down and do some measuring to see how much I would have to trim back the maximum case to fit the standard Blackhawk cylinder and still have enough room to seat a Sledgehammer bullet. It's hard to say. Reeder has necked the 41 to 357 and the 357 to 32 so I am left wondering if the 41 mag case can be necked to 32....?

Keep in mind the 321 GNR (32/357 Magnum) is possible in the O.M. Single Six.

With an 8" barrel this would be manageable and a screamer.
