I'm still in love with my 4" model 69. Guessing the round count is over six thousand rounds. Half of that was 6.5 grains of trail boss with #1103. All the rest of 19 grains of wc820, federal 155 and the 1103. The light load is 725fps, the heavy is 1200. I did fire lap it, ten rounds smoothed the barrel considerably. The X frame grips have worn through where the base of my thumb contacts. Have a new pair but the old still work mostly. Sure is nice to carry especially after this past falls grizzly problems.

If you had to real quick on the spot recommend one bbl length or the other, which one? Sounds like I've already made my mind up, huh? Yup, sounds like you've made up your mind. If I could only have one, it would be the 4 1/4" with the Hogue S&W 500 X Frame grips. The 4 1/4" is a bit easier to shoot -- and you get a some what better ballistics with the longer tube. With that said, the short gun sure is fun to shoot especially with .44 special equiv loads. Thankfully I don't have to choose, so I have both. Good luck with which ever one you choose, I doubt you'll regret your choice. Paul

I've retired three or four sets of X Frame grips with that problem -- it does take a bit of shooting although they seem to wear faster on the 329s. They work so well for me that I have several spares. Paul

Exactly! Everything else hammers the bone at the base of my thumb. They have been a God send for me.

The reports here have proved invaluable for me. Being a snubby leaning curmudgeon, I grabbed the 2-3/4" model recently. I asked my local dealer to order me one and they couldn't locate a single one. I figured I'd better move sooner than later so I found one on gun broker and it is on the way. You never know when a gun company will just up and decide to end production on a model so I didn't want to dally.
The GP100 44 Spl is well liked here. Mine is the stainless 3" model. But I assumed it would be good to go with both the Skeeter load and the Keith load, just like the flat top Ruger Bisley. But cases of cracked forcing cones and Brian Pearce saying "no," kind of dampened my spirit for the little GP. Most loads would be a 240 swc over 6 grains W231, but having the option of stuffing 5 rounds of 250 Keith over 15+ 2400 (or 12.5 grains Blue Dot) was a nice thought.
I'm anxious to get the 69 and take it out to the range. I have a bunch of 44 Special, but only a partial box of 44 mag left over from when I used to load with my now ex-brother in law. Sounds like I need to order the 500 Hogue X grip for me as well.
Perfect Packing Pistol? Just maybe...

Something I noticed in Pearce's data, the point of diminishing returns for slow burn powders seems to be A2400. His data shows H110 actually giving less velo with the 4.2". Doesn't seem to be a pay off to going to slower powders or ones needing mag primers, etc.. This may not hold true with heavy weight bullets, and this is where the M69 will shine over the GP. I've shot Federal CastCore 300gr and Speer 270gr Gold Dots thru my M69. Believe Paul has gone both heavier and hotter. The GP can't play there.

I don't know if I'll ever need anything more than a 250 Keith, or the 255 Cast Performance WFN bullets here or not. No immediate plans for the heavyweight bullets but you never know. Planning on light loads for plinking and heavy 44 Special for defense or backup hunting revolver or the like.
Will get the 69 in and ring it out, then decide if I want the 500 X frame grips (probably will, I know they make a huge difference with the 454 Alaskan SRH).

I have enjoyed my Model 69 4.2" since 2014. I fondled a new 69 2.75" at my LGS the other day and I really need one. Frame size for me is perfect, my hand enjoys the L frame, it works with the N frame. This 2.75" will be fed the 250 Keith and 8.0 Power Pistol and that will be it's everyday working load. I've had great accuracy from this load in all my 44s whether N or L frame. Can't wait to post a 2.75" on this forum. I've already got some 3" Galco Combatmaster Leather for it. Saved over from my days with the 696.

Picked up the 2.75" 69 this afternoon. It's as tight as any DA revolver (and all but the FA SA revolvers) as I've ever held. I like it already. Compares very favorably to the Ruger GP100, shown here together. .

Groo here S&w did what Ruger should have, chamber the gun in 44 mag and let the shooter decide what power level they wanted.
