was at a pawn/gun shop today looking around and saw a 28-2 with a partridge front sight and 6" barrel. tag said it was chambered in 44spl. I didn't have the them take it out of the case (I hate to bother them if i'm not going to buy it) so I don't know how good a job was done but it looked really nice. price was $675 I think.
how common is it to find 357 Smiths re-chambered to 44spl?

I wouldn't say they're uncommon but I've only seen one that I know of. If the shop advertising it had kept their poop in a group it would have been mine.
The price sounds realistic without seeing pics...

I don't know, but if the work is good I'd jump on it. How cool is that?

It's been done many times, If it appears to be a well executed conversion I would JUMP on it for that price.

Well the conversion would cost more than that with most of the reputable smiths these days much less the purchase of the base gun.
Done well it's a steal, of course if it was done poorly it's not worth more than scrap value at the metal recycler. You just have to get in it your hands and look it over closely.

Skeeter Skelton got the ball rolling on that particular conversion, which prompted S&W to reintroduce the 44 special in the model 24 and 624. I believe MMC corp may have done the conversion for Skeeter.

These are great guns with their tapered barrel. I have had two of them. One by Horvath and one by Stroh and they were both beautiful guns.

For price, if it is in decent shape, buy it. I have one done by Stroh and it is by far my favorite Double Action.

I'll go buy it if you won't. I'll happily drive a few hours for that. I have one in process right now and have more than that in it with a base gun and a rebore.

well I tell you what you enablers are just all kinds of terrible! that Smith has been preying on my mind all day so I decided to take off from work early and go look at it. it all happened pretty fast due to the time frame I had so I might be a little off on the details but I believe the barrel was marked 44 smith and Wesson special on the right side. the only other markings I remember seeing were on the frame under the crane. bluing looked pretty good with only a small amount of wear near the muzzle and a slight turn line. cylinder was recessed for the case heads. BC gap was pretty small and lockup felt good. action felt good too. it had checkered target stocks and I believe Color case hardened trigger and hammer. there was a little leading in the barrel but that didn't surprise me with a used gun. I asked the salesman if he'd take $650 for it on layaway and he said sure. i'm not too Smith savvy so hoping I did good on this one.

I'm sure you did just fine, but if you end up not liking it, you can always send it up to Indiana...I'll gladly take it off your hands!
