as soon as i can get the money, i will order a tc encore that is a 500L with a 23" heavy barrel from MGM. i want to try a 450gr lfn gc(montana bullets) with unique, tite group and 2400. also i should get hs-6(don't have it yet). i will use the 500L starline brass. i've been going over which primers( 500 Linebaugh Load Data | Single-Actions which i like) do i use? i've liked my cci 300(lpp) when i load up my 44sp. i also have winchester and federal lrp(i only hunt with them, i don't do competitive shooting anymore). i don't have any pistol magnum primers because i haven't shot my 44 mag in some years. i don't have any magnum rifle primers either. so should i do lp or lr or magnum(lp or lr) primers in my tc encore?

My understanding on the .500 Linebaugh is to use magnum pistol primers only. Rifle primers, so sayeth Jack Huntington, will create too much pressure in the cartridge.

LR primers sit a tad higher in the primer pocket, too, so there could be problems simply from that. If the brass from Starline says LPP then that's what I would use.

Light primer strikes with the harder rifle primers in this test. 500L Primer Testsingleactions.proboards.com/thread/9960/500-linebaugh-primer-questionFeb 5, 2013 at 1:51pm jwp475 said: Large pistol mag primers are the best in the Linebaugh cartridges, large rifle primers increase pressure sometimes as much as 10,000 PSI with out a corrosponding increase in velocity That number came straight out of John Linebaughs mouth. He has pressure test barrels and has pressure tested different primers. The large rifle primer over ignites the powder effectively increasing the burn rate. I have always used large pistol primers in the 475L abnd 500L.

I would agree that rifle primers in the Linebaugh would be a bad idea.
As far as magnum vs standard pistol primers tho, I think there's some leeway for the application of common sense. As he does for the Linebaughs, JL recommends magnum pistol primers for his 5 shot cylinder only .45 loads too. But JL has a preference for ball powders, notably H-110, which can be difficult to light reliably with standard primers. Other powders, such as the stick powder I like are easier to ignite and may prefer a standard primer.

Along those lines, some data I've read (Speer?) says the AA9 powder sees no significant increase in muzzle velocity with the use of magnum primers; just an increase in pressure.

alright, large pistol primers it is. i was just wondering why starline( www.starlinebrass.com/brass-cases/500-Linebaugh-Brass/ ) says a 500L uses a large rifle primer. i have used win296 with a magnum pistol primer with my 44 mag but i gave it up and i only use lp primer and 44 sp brass. the powders i listed (1100-1300fps in a 23" barrel) should be enough(temp 20-70deg). in my state, PA, i have seen -7 to 80 deg on deer season. 20deg, i'm cold but its endurable. 15deg i'm really cold and i'm starting to wonder how good it can be under my bed. 10deg or less, i look out my window, sigh, and then i go next to my pellet burner and smile .

The .500 Linebaugh was originally .348 Winchester brass opened up then cut to 1.4". It naturally had a large rifle primer pocket. Always has even though there is now properly headstamped brass. I assume the pocket size hasn't changed because if it ain't broke don't fix it.
