Here's the question. What .357 magnum revolver has the longest cylinder? Or, in what gun can you shoot the 170gr Keith bullet with .357 magnum brass and use the crimp groove designed in the bullet. I think the old model 19 smiths could do this but I don't think they would hold up to a steady diet of the Keith load. I know my flat top ruger will not work without trimming brass and my Colt Trooper is even shorter. I think Dan Wesson cylinders are too short and I guess a 686 smith is too short(?). Finding an old Redhawk would be great. And then there is the FA model 83.... I guess I have answered my own question!

I have wondered that myself. About the only thing I found in my searches is that the S&W 586 can, so I would think equivalent revolvers with it could. Jim Taylor said he got the Lyman 358429 in his old model 357 Blackhawk, and even set it off with small rifle primers. (Said double action guns don't always have the strength to use small rifle primers, so a single action only thing). So, there is that.
I am curious as well.

A NM Ruger Blackhawk will. I thought the OM's did too, but you said yours did not.
Dan
I guess I should clarify... Ruger New Models on the large frame will. Not sure about the medium frame.

My 686 & my GP100 will both accept a 357 mag case with and original full-size Ideal 358429, and the hollowpoint version 358439 without issue, crimped in the factory crimping groove. I also have full length LBT 185 LFN, and even 358156 (std & Hollowpoint) seated out to the second crimping groove. I've been meaning to experiment with slightly heavier loads with the long seated 358156, but haven't gotten around to it.

Grab a new model 357 blackhawk and have a maximum cylinder shortened to just fit in the frame window and there you go.

The Lyman 358429 loaded in magnum brass fits in my NM 357 Bisley cylinder and my 586, no go in my Security Six or GP100 though.

With my guns, a non recessed M66 & M686 Smith are good to go. A GP110 & Security 6 is iffy(.010" left for bullet creep). An OMBH & a NM flattop BH is a no go.

I've a new model BH .357 that easily fits that bullet. Mine go 173grs. The 180gr XTP seated long fits too.

Ream the cylinder throats? I have an Sp101 that I shoot 180gr from a Mihec mold in, crimped in the crimp groove *most* of them chamber ok. I've had some that were "sticky" and had to be tapped out or shot out. I've thought about sending it t Cylinderhone.net (check facebook) and see if he can help matters.

Got my hands on a 686-1 today and there is plenty of room for the Keith bullet and .357 brass. Now I'm searching for a 686 with a 8 3/8" barrel!

The Taurus M608 has a 1.73" cylinder and holds 8 rounds. The 8" barrel model is discontinued though and becoming hard to find.

I should measure the cylinder on the large size Virginian Dragon - that is a huge 357. will try to do that this weekend.

Have specs changed on the GP100? I recall shooting 173 grain Keith swc's in both my 686 and my GP100...
