How fast would be safe for what bullet using Unique in 45 Colt? I have a lot of Unique and not much else One of my wheel guns is demanding a heavier bullet because I've run out of vertical adjustment on the rear sight with 255gr SWC's. I am hoping to not have to stock another powder.

Linebaugh lists some stout 45 colt loads in his writings, I THINK I used one of his recommendations with a 265gr bullet and got 1200fps. I want to say 12grs, but don't use it without working up from 9 or 10. The load was accurate, but it was stout. I changed to H110 just to lower pressures but keep the velocity.

The answer depends on what revolver is in play, too. I use the 45 Colt in a USFA SAA, Ruger Bisley and FA M83. The absolute max' load would be different in each. Needless to say, I am very particular about labeling and segregating ammo. I have had excellent results with Unique in all three. Good luck on your journey.

I wouldn't even post a suggestion. My 45 Colts range from Uberti Flattop Target to RedHawks and 5-Shot customs. Loaded question and answer on this one.

Ok just because you have a bunch of a given powder isn't a good reason to try and make it perform in ways it's not meant to be used. Develope a good load at a reasonable power level for the powder you have and go to the gun shop and buy a couple pounds of powder that are a good match for the performance you are looking to reach.
All pushing Unique is going to do is wear on your gun excessively. But it would punch a bullet at 1100fps alight and I can't think of too many situations where an extra 100fps would really matter all that much. Better ways to ski the cat in my never humble opinion.

DOUBLRE AMEN TO THIS!! BUYING OTHER POWDER IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN REPLACING A RUINED SIXGUN.

It is for a Ruger Bisley Vaquero with adjustable sights done by Clements. With the rear adjusted up as far as I dare, it is still about 1/2" low at 10y with 255gr SWC and 9gr of Unique. I had already ordered up some 300gr WFN's from Montana Bullet works to bring up the POI and just wanted to check with everyone if it would still be OK with Unique to about between 900-1000 fps in order to get above POA at 10y so I can bring the rear sight back down a bit I'm not trying to go much faster than that because it may then just be low all over again. I am thinking that I should be OK with Unique but I wanted to know other people's experience with faster so I have an idea how much margin I have and if I was missing something.

My original thought on using uniquecwas due to the 3.75" barrel and getting powder burned more effieciently in the short barrel. It did that, but the blast was a bunch, I still use it for my GF blackhawk and a 230gr ACP bullet, plenty accurate.

Why not shoot "sane" level loads for Unique, and simply shorten the front sight to bring the POI up to where you need it to be?

That is the question.
What is "sane" with Unique (for 300gr bullets, in my case) in a Ruger?

Agree with the others that 1000fps with a 300gr will do most everything that needs doing, and probably all of what you need it to do.

I'm not a Unique expert, but seems like pushing a 300 to 1000 with Unique is going to be well into the red, no? I think I'd choose 2400 or H-110 or N-110...

I suppose "sane" is a pretty flexible term. If you are wanting to shoot 300gr bullets, I'd use an appropriate slow powder and not only enjoy added safety, but also better consistency. Save the Unique for your lighter bullet, plinking type loads.
But consider yourself lucky that it's shooting low. Most of us need a taller sight than the factory installs because it's shooting high. To me, it's a good sign when a builder installs a "too tall" sight. That way you can fine tune it to your liking.

I don't think you'll get 900 FPS with a 300 grant bullet and unique safely. I've always read that once unique gets to 10 grains or so in a 45 colt it's topped out and going above that results in erratic pressure spikes.
Very nice revolver!

Is that Vaquero rated for Ruger only loads? Did they make more than one size Vaquero frame? Unique has always been a dirty burning powder in my .45 colts. According to the Speer # 13 manual 10.5 gr is MAX [Ruger only]with a 300 gr bullet and gets 952 fps from a 7 1/2 in barrel. There are better powders for what you want to do. Changing the front sight would be the smartest, cheapest, safest way to go.
