For those of you that read Doc's thread about the start of his Linebaugh custom gun, I thought I would let you know that things are now moving along with my gun.
My apologies to Doc for nearly hijacking your thread. That was not my intention at all.
For those interested, Dustin has had my gun plus deposit for 5 years, as of early this month. I spoke with him a little over a year ago, at which time he told me it would be done shortly after the first of the year (2015). When I didn't hear from him, I was quite disappointed, but let it slide, as I had other more pressing concerns that were taking up my energies. I really had not thought much about it until seeing Doc's post. When I found that his gun had been started, yet he had sent it to Dustin a full two years after he had received mine, I was less than happy. As I said in the other thread, I would not throw stones until speaking to Dustin.
I called Dustin this morning and left a message for him that we needed to discuss the situation. He returned my call within a couple of hours. Long story short, he was very apologetic and offered no excuses as to why he had not started on my gun yet. He took full credit for the delay and told me he would send pics of the work in progress within a couple of hours, and that I would have my gun in about three weeks.
Dustin just sent a pic of the work that has been done on my gun. The cylinder has been roughed out and the frame window opened. Not much to see yet, really. I'm pretty sure that he did the work today after our phone conversation.
I'm not really sure what to think of the situation. While I am certainly upset at the way this build has progressed, Dustin has taken full responsibility, and apparently moved me to, or at least near, the top of the heap. He was cordial and apologetic. I'll leave things at that for now, as I have no intention of speaking poorly of Dustin. I am just frustrated.

Wow, five years is enough to teach a man to be patient. I only own one custom, but I sure had the opposite experience. In 2007 I had finally passed my professional engineer exam and my company gave me a 1000 dollar bonus. I decided to send my beloved accusport bisley to Bowen for a nimrod conversion. I figured I'd have a year or more to scrape up another 1500 bucks for the rest. Imagine my dismay when he called about a month later and suggested I send the rest as it was done! Accounting was unhappy with me but she got over it and I sure like that gun. She even surprised me that christmas with a Von ringler Wyoming cross draw.
Glad your pistol will be on its way to you soon.

I will only add been there done that on the waiting with him....However when you receive a Dustin L. built gun an even comparing it to a John L built gun you will in either case forget your labor pains...He is a true artist in looks and feel when in hand...I have 2 of his. fwiw

You must have the patience of a saint. 5 years is ridiculous to wait for a custom gun.

JW,
NO worries! As stated, I was checking on my own project after TWO years. Maybe we will both get our projects back sooner rather than later now that we have both talked to him.
All the best,
Andy (SubDoc)

I understand that the wait is the hard part, but 5 years to get one from Dustin is very good and not rare at all in the Full Custom 1911 world, trust me, and those guys do it for a living. Dustin Ranches full time and does this on the side. It will be worth every year of the wait. You will be happy with his guns. He puts more in them than he charges.
Please send pictures when you get it. Dustin is the best that I have seen, and I have seen and shot a little bit of everything.
Excited for you.

It took five years for Dustin to build a friend of mines gun as well. For what he and his dad are charging now, you'd think they'd be more serious about maintaining a reasonable delivery time. The custom gun world is rife with poor business practices like this, but that doesn't make it right. The Linebaugh's are now capitalizing on their well deserved reputation as pioneers in big bore revolver building and John's cartridge designs. Nothing wrong with that really. However, IMHO several other folks build guns just as nice for less than half the price, and one fifth the delivery time. Being super nice guys, John and Dustin can do no wrong in some folks mind. I have nothing against them, but I won't commission a gun with them until they take their business more seriously.

I agree with the comments about business practices. I would have no problem whatsoever if a custom gunsmith told me in advance the wait would be five years--it would be my choice as to whether I wanted to wait or not. But to take someone's deposit and leave the whole thing open-ended is in my view a poor practice. I would be miffed regardless of the quality of the gun ultimately delivered. I don't understand why workflow can't be planned in a more logical and straightforward manner.

I got to say that Dustin has been very up front with me about how busy he is and how much time it will take on my work, and his prices are more than fair. I have a great deal of experience seeing other peoples work and understand why Dustin charges what he does. I have had some let downs in the past. There are lots of smiths out there, but Dustin is an artist. I've seen em all, and I'm telling you, if you have a gun from Dustin you will not be disappointed. His guns hold great value. On the other hand, there are sure a lot of other great options for others out there that want a gun fast and will be plenty happy with what they get. There is a lot of good stuff out there. Enjoy!
