Pressure won't be an issue as we just can't run it up that high in a six gun. Crimping will require a die to be made... Would a custom Lee FCD work or would the die body be to long?

Would the trick of bumping a loaded round into the FL die do you any good on a crimp? I am curious to see if this cartridge responds to a "softer" primer, I mean in terms of flame rather than cup hardness. A lot of us found a standard small pistol primer to work better on the 22 hornet. Most beliefs tended to be towards the idea of the rifle primer was pushing the powder and bullet out before complete ignition. Jeff

That looks to be minute-of-jackrabbit right there!

Guys, I really think the little gun will do under 1.5" at 50 handheld. I just need to chase the velocity spikes out of the load. There are 3 shots in just over an inch there. Flyers, well, shit, what can I say, they will always be there to help me look silly. But that one shot that goes from 1600 fps to 1700 fps cant be helping....
I'll figure it out.
The switch from mag to standard primer did drop the velocity from 1700 to 1625 fps.

Not to make excuses, or even Hi Jack my own thread, but I have been out for the last 2 months because I have had a cascade of health issues. Nothing that's gonna kill me but enough to make me not well for a good while. All this was compounded by my primary Doctors retirement and a change in my health insurance which required me to start all over again with every heath test known to man, (Seriously, a "bone density" test??? A gorilla prolly has weaker bones,,), Some medication changes, and some lifestyle changes. Ok, I managed to get out yesterday and do a little shooting with the Jackrabbit. Keep in mind, I am just on my feet again after a ear infection as well as a root canal I had 5 days ago. Oh, and a front was coming in and the wind was a mild 40 mph. Yeah, my wife yelled at me for going out in the cold and wind but I already missed a ton of hunting season and have cabin fever like never before. So off I went. I had Ray make me a crimp die for the Jackrabbit. I had been at a loss to explain the wild velocity swings I was experiencing the H110 powder in my particular sixgun. My conversations with Lee Martin who feels a crimp die was not needed not withstanding I had to know for myself. I tried 9.5 grains of H110, Lil Gun, and 680. I knew 9.5 was safe with H110, so I reasoned since both Lil Gun and 680 were slower powders 9.5 would be safe for those as well. 680 is no longer available but I believe AA1680 is pretty close. Again, reduce 10% and work up! Don't bend your sixgun! The long and short of my test yesterday is A) nothing is wrong with my chronograph. Despite the dark overcast conditions it worked perfectly well albeit without the skyscreens on. I have tested it over and over and I'm sure it's fine. B) H110 contined to give wild velocity swings at 9.5 grains. 1450 to 1750fps even with a stout crimp. Accuracy was still about 2 to 2.5" at 53 yards. C) 680 shows some promise. However velocity was quite low, 1550-1600 fps, and it needs more testing. Still, I was encouraged by the more stable velocity readings. D) Lil Gun may be the best powder for this little sixgun so far. Velocity readings were 1650 to 1700 fps. Here is the Lil Gun target wart and all....

Oh, as an aside, I get a note from Barranti. He wanted to know why I couldn't pull a target without ripping it up. I told him that S. Texas wasn't Neverland and that just to get a target to stay on the back board here required some 27 staples for the wind. If you look closely at the pic above, you can see I stapled the stupid thing to the bench so I could get a picture of it. I just got a note yesterday from Taffin wanting some more pictures for his book, but all I can say is it just ain't that easy....

11.0 grns of Lil Gun and a 75 grn bullet have been my standard 25-20 load for years.
Brass life has been excellent, so assume pressure is reasonable.
Great report and hope your changes improve your health issues.

Thanks encore64, your observations are very important to me because while the 25-20 and the 257 JR are similar cartridges. The 257 Jackrabbit will have some less case capacity thus a smaller charge will yield similar pressures. What is your SIXGUN velocity with your 75 grain bullet noted above?

Not fired in a sixgun. From my 22" T/C Carbine velocity is 2400 fps. From the 10" pistol barrel about 2185-2200 fps.
I believe using heavier bullets will stabilize H110, AA1680 & 4227. I just found 1500 Remington 85 grn FN bullets organizing my reloading room. Am about to start experimenting with them.

I also believe you are correct about the heavier bullets. I just haven't been able to finish testing with the 60 grain Hornady bullet much less cast or heavies....
