As I am mostly a "plinker" I only chrono'd one load for the Bowen 25-20. 9.5 grs IMR-4227 under an 86 gr. cast bullet for just under 1400 fps. 5.5" barrel. No case set back and easy extraction.

My friend Mike "Doc" Barranti recently completed this beautiful rig for my Jackrabbit project. Clearly his talent is without peer...

I did manage to get some chrono time in with my 257 Jackrabbit. The original idea was to try to achieve 1400 fps with a 60 grain jacketed softpoint. We were quite sure this benchmark wasnt going to be much of a hurdle, the question really was, what could our new wildcat do? At what point would the cases set back? What velocity could be reached? Here are some test results: 8.5 grains H110 CCI 550 60 grain Hornady flat point 1550 fps. Very mild, accurate. Cases fall out easily. Primers normal. 9.1 grains H110 CCI 550 60 grain Hornady flat point 1620 fps. Still no pressure issues. 9.6 grains H110 CCI 550 60 grain Hornady flat point 1700 fps. Now we are getting somewhere... 10.2 grains H110 CCI 550 60 grain Hornady flat point 1725-1750 Cases are starting to stick. At 1800 fps the little gun was starting to lock up. So, it seems that 1700 fps is a comfortable speed. Im not sure if a more "tougher" or thick cup primer would make much difference. All that remains to be seen. This is about the best I can hold with my heart pounding with excitment!

That is a sweet setup! Nice looking revolver and holster. How would this cartridge work in a barrel length of say, 5.25 inches?

Well, I would guess it would run about 75 to 100 fps slower. But thats just a guess.

Harton, like myself is tickled that this simple wildcat is working out so well. While he was test firing it, he happened to shoot a melon with the 1550 fps starting load. He took a pic, but there wasn't much left to see. It will be really interesting to see how your shorter gun does. I can't wait!

My 257420 mold showed up today! I purchased 600 pcs. of NOE # 26063 which are plain base and weigh 65 grains. If they work I may purchase the mold from NOE. Fermin, Should I wait until I have the revolver in hand before I start forming and loading ammunition? Or would I be safe to load up a hundred or so just for fun. Thanks, Rod

I sent Alan 50 test fire rounds!
Be sure to cut the primer pockets BEFORE you trim cases. Harton headspaces the cylinders where even a slightly high primer will bind. I used a Sinclair primer pocket uniformer. The shorter cases are harder to hold!!

I was thinking about the .257 Jackrabbit this morning as it applies to game. Certainly it will never be suitable for Deer but Javelina, Bobcat, Coons, and Badgers and such might find it a bit hard to digest....
Pests like Skunk, Possum, Armadillo and other such most wouldn't care to eat might well be splattered about the landscape!

Cast me up some 257420 GCs this morning. The little lyman mold behaved wonderfully and dropped pretty bullets immediately once I cooked off the packing oil. Bullets dropped at .258" and weighed 71 grains. Ray will make me a sizer at .2575" and I will be turning and burning soon.
