Is it bashing to share your experiences with the forum?
Am I wrong, I am not aware of any other pistol smith who has been criticized on this forum?

Is this Tom C. from Missourri? If it is, great to hear from ya.
Curt R.
I also see some Reeder bashing around here and other popular forums but I just chalk it up to folks either being ignorant or just too damn sensitive. Most don't own any of his products and you guys that say he doesn't linebore or he doesn't block his action have some explaining to do because his guns just flat shoot well. Criticize all you want but if the gun shoots straight I don't see the validity of your argument....hey, but I am just a greenhorn myself with much to learn about spending money on custom guns that need it. Gary tells it like it is and has an opinion like many here do. I always check out his gun notes too.

I don't know him personally so I cannot speak in that regard. However, that gaudy, pimp daddy, ugly all over the place script he puts on his guns is enough to keep me from ever thinking about buying one. I don't care how well they shoot, I would not be caught dead with a bunch of 2nd grade looking garbage all over the side of one of my handguns. To those of you that like that kind of stuff, I have no problem. Personally I would rather be so gaulded I couldn't walk as to have a bunch of gaudy looking pin stripes down the side of my sixgun. BB

After a couple years I had a problem with timing which he fully warrantied without any problem. Timing seems to be an issue with lots of his revolvers from what I understand. This is not the first time I've heard about someone having trouble with the timing of their Reeder. Anyhow, to each his own. I personally don't like the etching -- engraving is one thing, but laser etching does little for me.

I was referring to the timing of his revolvers, not a personal issue. I do understand that he is abrasive, but I have fairly thick skin........

I was in charge of ordering chinese for a few people in my office the other day. I called the restaurant, asked if they had a lunch special, and got a 'yes'. I then asked what the special was/came with.
Well,....for some reason I got an ear full. The lady told me to just order what I wanted and she would take care of it, all in a tone that was 100% uncalled for.
I hung up the phone and ordered from a different company. Same thing I did a few years back with this guy. I figure if you're too busy to pick up the phone......don't. Is his work better than Linebaugh or Harton, etc that a person should have to put up with that? No. It would be a different story if he was the ONLY game in town, there was no FA, etc.

I would have a Reeder project or two in the works if I could get them without the big script engraving. I have asked about two separate projects (queries were over a year apart), and both times the conversation stalled when I asked about "subtle" & "factory style". Seemed like a nice enough and knowledgeable guy over the phone. I like his T&A classic, tho I wouldn't spend money for it... www.reedercustomguns.com/special_guns/ta_classic.htm

Reeder has dropped his already low prices and his delivery time is only 3 to 4 months so if you want one of his guns give him a call. I like reading his gun notes he's pretty funny at times in them and he seems to know what hes talking about. It might be best just to email him as his writing skills are a lot better then his phone skills. For me I would rather wait and pay a little more just so i didn't send him my business.

If you don't want the engraving - order your gun without it. In the custom gun business, you get the gun the way you want it. None of my Reeders have the engraving - then again I don't own any show pieces. ALL of my guns are shootin'/workin' guns and I am not yet interested in tying up a couple grand or more for some of the others.
The guns work so well at such a reasonable price, and have a real lifetime warranty - to me it is just plain good value and very much worth it. Fit and function have all been exceptional.
I have no idea of the timing issues that is mentioned here, none of my Reeder's have had any issues. The guns are very accurate and built very solid. So far I have 3 of his custom cartridges, and they just flat out work, and I might add work very well.
Some times on the web he comes across a little gruff; but when I shook his hand an talked with him, He is someone who has alot of knowlwege and is great to talk to.
To each his own I guess ...
As my gun collection grows, you can be very certain that there will be more Reeder customs going to the range with me.

Reading through his "Gun Notes" he is pretty clear that the guns can be had plain... He seem to be easily offended when someone refers to the scratching as "ugly" when they ask him to leave it off... My 5 shot Colt is proof that they can be plain... It still has that 45 Long Colt scrawled across the left side of the cylinder frame but that and a serial number on the other side is it..... I figure that must be part of what the BATFE requires as a minum..

I was looking for a smith to build me a .500Linebaughmaximum or better yet a 500SW on the old max frame were I would keep loads down but could use the .500" bullets and I wanted the longer cylinder to install in a 44mag I had for heavier bullets so I asked if I could keep the cylinder, first thing he told me was no one builds the 500maximums anymore then he told me about a 500maximum that blew up made by (he named a gunsmith that still converts guns today), asked him about line-boring and he told me how "he was rated the best gunsmith other than Bowen",and that line-boring was a gimmick, funny thing was I didn't care if it was line-bored or not I just wanted to know, he said he keeps the barrel and the cylinders on all the guns he builds for "liability reasons". I thought I got him on a bad day so I talked to him 2 more times asking him questions like the metal alloy in his frame he uses, most people will talk your ear off when you ask them about something there passionate about he never even ans that question just told me " its built right ether buy one or don't "! I thought if he was treating me like this now what if I have a problem with his work down the road? Then again he might be nicer now that he doesn't have as much work,Maybe I should give him another chance and give him a call!

I wonder what would happen if you sent him a base gun without the cylinder?

I wonder what would happen if you sent him a base gun without the cylinder? He'll pitch a fit! Seriously. I asked him about getting old parts back, he got bent out of shape. I asked about sending in the gun, an Old Model .357, without the parts that would be replaced and he went ballistic. Ain't got a damn thing to do with sugar-coating or spoon-feeding, if you question him at all on any level, he loses his composure.

Personally, I would rather pay more and get treated right, but that's just me.

I guess he figures getting to keep the parts is part of the low price you get. Sort of like trading in a used car... That's the thing, he doesn't use take-off parts for anything. They just pile up and he disposes of them. He won't go through his pile if you want something either.
