My 16 year old son Ethan has certainly taken after my love for classic sixguns, and was determined to take a deer with one this season. He got his wish....
I picked Ethan up after school yesterday, and we headed to a hunting spot not far from home. This place was shown to us by our good friend Curt Raybuck...COR on this board. By the time we got there, we had about an hour of daylight left, so we wasted no time as we walked in towards the waiting two man tree stand. In my pack was the custom 4.75" Colt New Frontier that Ethan wanted to use, but I handed Ethan my 7.5" Flattop 44 mag as we eased through the woods, just in case we jumped something before we got to the stand.
We were about to move off the main trail and climb the stand when something to our left caught my eye. I tapped Ethan and whispered 'Deer!'. His eyes locked on and he had the hammer cocked. My eyes were on the deer and I was about to tell him to kneel or sit when he squeezed the trigger. The deer just tipped over with one back leg going stiff straight up in the air. Holy ___!!
We turned to each other, and I'm pretty sure both of our smiles were larger than our faces. After all the hugs and high fives, we waited 15-20 minutes, then paced off the distance; 60 LONG steps. To say I am proud of him would be a gross understatement.
I need to take a moment to thank Curt. Curt has made a few hunting spots available to me and the boys that we otherwise would not have had the opportunity to hunt on, and for that, I am extremely grateful!!
Before anyone says that this means my Flattop should now be his, you should know that he already has one of his own...but I think I know who will get mine when my time comes....
Ethan with his special spike...
Here Ethan is with his own 7.5" Flattop...by the way, both of these sixguns came from the Forum Enabler, Mr. Robb Barnes!
