After getting inspired by 44Keith's thread on his M29 shooting high I decided to finally fix my old .41 Magnum. singleactions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=reloading&action=display&thread=9618&page=2) Using the following control load I determined my gun was shooting about 8 inches high at 25 yards. Bullet: Oregon Trail 215 gr. SWC (.412) Powder: Power Pistol 6.8 grs. Primer: Federal 150 Case: Federal I used the sight correction calculator from Brownell's and determined the S&W .125 Replacement Blade should work (my rear sight wasn't completely bottomed out). The original blade height was .160. www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=13093/GunTechdetail/Sight_Correction_CalculatorGot the tools (S&W Rear Sight Nut Spanner and Staking Punch), spare parts, Jerry Kuhnhausen Shop Manual and went to work. Big point here! Disassemble the rear sight in a gallon zip lock bag to avoid losing the small windage screw plunger and spring. They are nearly microscopic! Everything went pretty smooth until I had to remove the slider blade. It was stuck and the windage nut wouldn't budge. I had to carefully drill the broken windage screw out (from the windage nut) with my Dremel. Luckily the screw was soft and I've got steady hands! Turned out great! I took it to the range tonight and it was shooting a little low for the first time using a normal bullet weight. Feels like I've got a new gun!
