What a whirl wind weekend. I got a chance to go to a friend’s ranch to get rid of a troublesome Water Buffalo. It had damaged a couple of trucks and chased two different people of the ranch and Richard decided it was time for it to go before someone was hurt. Charles and I rode down together Friday to meet Joe and Richard at the ranch in Hondo Texas. It was a nice ride down other than the traffic trying to get through Austin. We had a great time catching up on our story telling. The temp was still well above 100 F when started making plans for our stalk for the Water Buffalo and decided to grab some supper and let the temps come down before heading out after the buff, so we headed to town for some BBQ. We where meet there by Richards lovely wife and daughter, they add grace and beauty to any setting. The Hondo area is suffering from a tough drought and we had a good dose of dust for desert. As we were trying to make our stalks some storms were trying to brew up and it started kicking up a swirling wind. One minute the wind was in our face and then the next it was at our back making it tough to sneak up on anything. With the wind and late start it was just not enough daylight left Friday to get it done. So we called it a day due to lack of light, couldn't see our sights well enough for the shots we needed to take. We went to Richard’s house and talked guns and hunting until it was past time to hit the rack. Up early at the bunk house Charles and I had our morning Diet Dr. Pepper and waited for Joe, Richard and Robbie to arrive at 6:30 am. With still winds and lower temps we put a stalk on the buff and got broad side shot at it from about 45 yards. Charles was using an 1895 Winchester in 405WCF loaded with 300gr North Fork cup point solids. I was using a Model 71 Winchester loaded with Grizzly Cartridge’s 348 250gr Kodiak bullet load and Joe was using a 375 H&H loaded with a 380gr Rhino bullet as our make sure we don’t get a mud hole stomped in us gun. Charles drew the straw to be the first to shoot and Joe and I fired on report, we all fired within a couple of seconds of each other. The big old Buff hit the ground without ever taking another step. We put in a couple of extra rounds to insure that it wasn’t going to get up. Lots of good meat going in the freezer.
