Took my 74 year old Dad on an oryx hunt last week on the Armendaris Ranch in South Central New Mexico. The oryx were brought into White Sands Missile Range years ago and they've spread out to adjacent ranches It's a free range ranch.. NO high fences, that Ted Turner owns. 634 square miles..yes... miles in size. Last NMGF aerial survey puts around 1000 oryx, 700 buffalo, 400 antelope and 300 mulies on the place along with 60 desert bighorns. Went on a 5 day hunt with Tierra Encantada Outfiters out of San Antonio, NM (It is the original one). Saw tons of oryx but they're not easy to get to. Dad shot his at about 250yds, close to the truck since he's having a little trouble getting around on the 3rd day. I shot mine on the 4th afternoon at 375yds after a 400yd belly crawl to get close enough. My knees are all scabbed up from the malpai. We had a great time. Good fellowship, food and lots of lies. This is no gimme hunt. You will kill one but it's a real hunt and if you want a nice one, you'll work for it.

Very nice! Looks like a great hunt. So, do tell what guns, loads etc did you both use?

Dad was shooting a Weatherby ultra light weight in .300 Wby magnum from the custom shop and Wby factory ammo with 180 Nosler Partitions.
I was shooting a single shot Blaser Luxus K95 in .300 Win. and handloads of 200gn Nosler Accubonds over a max dose of RL22 @ 2980 FPs out of the 26" barrel. The high B.C. of this bullet makes it shoot really flat and retain it's energy way out.
This rifle has accounted for 2 Elk, 3 antelope and an Oryx since I got it 3 years ago. Breaks and switchs barrels just like a shotgun. I have another just like it as a backup just in case and I don't have to bring the whole rifle along.
I have barrels in .222, .243, .257 Wby, .270 Win, .30-06, .300 Win and 9.3X74R. The .243 and .30-06 are in 20" full stock stutzen configuration. It is the most consistently accurate rifle I own, Weighing in at about 6.5 pounds scoped with a Swarovski AV Rail mounted scope. It is not for the faint of heart in the larger calibers but man does it shoot! Not that this would be a problem with many here shooting big boomers all the time.

I like both of those rifles! Different approaches to the same issue, both well done. Looks like a good hunt. Wonderful memories and good looking game. Thanks for sharing.
