What is the best way to remove the finish on the aluminum frame and erh of a Ruger SS. I don't have a buffer so work will be done by hand. -Paul-

Try oven cleaner and a scothbrite pad Thanks for the help. Not sure if it's something I want to do yet but the finish is coming off in several places. If it was normal wear like blueing wearing off I'd leave it alone but this looks like paint chipping and that annoys me greatly.

Its a ton of work and you may be better off sending it out for media blasting and get it refinished, but crc makes a product called break clean which can work well along with a dremel wire wheel. Just wear gloves with BC its got some serious fumes and will get you higher than a kite soaking through your skin

A lot less messy and time consuming... BTW it is "paint chipping" that's why it looks like that (although some painter is going to correct me soon )!

It's been a number of years, but the last Ruger frame I stripped was with Drano crystals (sodium hydroxide). I mixed at 1 teaspoon per quart of warm water and dropped the frame into the solution for about 7 minutes, then rinsed in fresh water and cleaned it up with 400 & 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Be careful as to how long you soak the parts, as you can etch the surface if it sits too long. Also, wear protective gloves & eyeglasses, as the caustic solution can burn you pretty good.

Lye and aluminum also give off hydrogen...think Hindenburg. Keep away from ignition sources, not too good to breath either.
